Coast Mountain Expeditions

Coast Mountain Expeditions Coast Mountain Expeditions offers multi-day guided kayak tours in the Discovery Islands.

35 years ago, Ralph and Lannie Keller founded Coast Mountain Expeditions to support an off-grid island homestead lifestyle. We hand built Canada’s first kayak lodge and became one of BC’s original kayak tour companies. The wisdom of experience, and help from (son) Albert and other talented folk have perfected our offerings – now including superb multi-day kayak adventures, lodge-based and daytrip

kayaking, and kayak instruction for beginner to advanced paddlers. Discovery Islands Lodge is our end-of-the-road kayakers’ B&B on Quadra Island. We welcome you to a kayakers’ paradise of sheltered ocean, towering mountain vistas, rainforest shores, marine parks and abundant wildlife… along with down-home friendliness and wholesome meals from garden and ocean.

There is no kayak trip that cannot be made better with the addition of a waterfall, and Toba Inlet has several. This is one of the small ones. 'Nuff said.

We appreciate this amazing crew of women every day, but they get an extra shout out on International Women's Day. In addition to being talented, knowledgeable, and hardworking, they are also a ton of fun to be around! We feel so lucky to have them on our team.

We’ve had some dates come available for full-lodge spring bookings at Discovery Islands Lodge! We offer these facility-only full-lodge rentals in our shoulder season. May is always the first to fill, so this is a great opportunity to plan a trip. The lodge is popular for courses, family reunions, and retreats, and can accommodate up to 20 people.

We don’t pay a lot of attention to the changing of the calendar year; we find the natural seasonal cycles that Earth offers up much more meaningful.

That being said, we’re always happy for a chance to reflect and look forward. 2026 will be our 38th year running wilderness tours in the Discovery Islands and Mainland Inlets, and each year deepens our respect for, and wonder of the incredible ecosystems that sustain us. We love to share it, and hope that everyone leaves our trips with a little more knowledge and awareness of the importance of protecting these special places.

A new year also brings a new group of paddlers, and we’re excited to meet all of you! We’ve met some of our closest friends on kayaking trips, and we’re grateful to be able to connect personally with almost everyone who joins one of our trips. Here’s to new friends!

A new season also means the return of guides and staff, and the welcoming of new faces. We are so appreciative of the dedication of our team to building skills, acquiring and sharing knowledge, and generally being really, really fun to spend time with. I’m sure that every kayak company thinks they have the best team, but ours is extra special.

Wherever life takes you this year, we hope it’s full of time in nature with friends!
