One of my favourite things about exploring close to home is finding places that make you feel like you’ve stepped somewhere different.

Is this Mars in California?

Just 45 minutes from San Francisco, the pink salt ponds at Alviso Marina get their vibrant color from salt-loving algae and microorganisms that thrive in the highly salty water. It’s a unique natural sight you don’t expect to find in Silicon Valley.

The walk is an easy, flat 2.7-mile round trip, but set expectations because the main attraction is the pink pond and surrounding wetlands. I used my drone to capture the best views of the vibrant colors and patterns you can’t fully appreciate from the ground.

Visit late summer through early fall on a sunny day for the best chance of seeing the brightest pink. Please visit responsibly: stay on designated paths and do not cross the barriers or enter protected areas.

📍Alviso Marina County Park - San Jose, CA

It’s a unique stop if you’re already exploring the South Bay or looking for something different.
