We are guests in their habitat.

Every time we head out on the water, we’re stepping into the wild home of orcas, humpbacks, sea lions, eagles, and more. This isn’t a performance—it’s real life unfolding in real time.

At Seabreeze Adventures, we believe the most meaningful wildlife encounters happen when we simply observe and respect. That’s why we:

🌊 Follow all DFO Marine Mammal Regulations and Be Whale Wise guidelines to ensure every encounter is safe for the animals and respectful of their space
🌊 Maintain distances and reduce speed around wildlife to minimize disturbance
🌊 Never initiate or pursue interactions
🌊 Educate guests about ethical wildlife viewing and marine conservation
🌊 Our captains and naturalists are trained to ensure every trip is both awe-inspiring and eco-responsible

Each fin that breaks the surface, each sea lion lounging on the rocks, each eagle soaring overhead—it’s not for us. We’re just lucky enough to witness a small piece of their day.

And that’s what makes it so powerful. 💙

🐋 Double the flukes, double the magic ✨

On our August 9 tour, guests were treated to not one, but two humpback whales lifting their massive tails before a deep dive into the Salish Sea. Each fluke is like a fingerprint, unique to the individual, and helps researchers track these whales across their long migrations.

Moments like this remind us just how special our waters are—and why we love sharing them with you. 💙

🪶 Rare sighting alert! A Brown Pelican was spotted in the Salish Sea on July 31 — a special moment for everyone on board!

This beautiful bird cruised along the Steveston Jetty before resting on the rocks, offering a great chance for guests to observe and photograph a species not commonly seen this far north.

🧠 Did you know? Brown pelicans are the only pelican species that dive from the air to catch fish — sometimes plunging from as high as 60 feet! They're usually found along the southern Pacific coast, but occasionally wander up into BC waters in the summer.

Moments like this remind us that the Salish Sea is full of surprises and that every tour brings a new opportunity to connect with nature.

🐋 How Do Humpback Whales Feed?
Recently we had the opportunity to observe a humpback whale lunge feeding at the surface over and over again. These gentle giants use incredible strategies to catch their food — and some are mind-blowing! Here is a short overview of humpback feeding techniques:
🐳 Lunge Feeding: A fast upward surge through dense prey at the surface.🌊 Deep-Dive Feeding: Engulfing entire schools of fish or krill, often using features of the seafloor to corner prey deep underwater.
✨ Bubble-Net Feeding: A group effort where whales blow bubbles to trap fish in a circle, then lunge up to gulp them.
🌀 Trap Feeding: Rare! Whales float with mouths open to catch fish swimming in.
💥 Flick Feeding: A tail slap stuns fish near the surface.

🎯 These techniques show just how intelligent and adaptable humpbacks are — and if you're lucky, you might witness one in action on your next tour!

📅 Now is peak feeding season. Book your whale-watching adventure today!

One second, calm seas… the next, a humpback is in the air. 🐋💦

Breaching isn’t something we see every day, but when it happens, it’s unforgettable. Some say it’s communication, others say it’s just for fun. Whatever the reason, we’re just lucky to witness it.

Humpbacks are one of our most frequent visitors during the summer months—keep your eyes on the horizon. You never know what you’ll see.

🐋 Orcas have a whole vocabulary of surface behaviours, and each one tells us something different.

Here are a few to watch for on the water:

✨ Breaching – When an orca launches out of the water and lands with a splash. Rare to see, but unforgettable when it happens.

👀 Spyhopping – Lifting their head vertically to take a look above the surface. It’s one way they explore their surroundings.

💥 Tail Slapping – A loud slap of the tail on the water, possibly used to communicate, startle prey, or signal to other whales.

When these behaviours happen, they’re incredible to witness. And our naturalists are always on hand to explain what’s going on.

🐋 Did you know every humpback whale has a unique tail fluke—like a fingerprint?

These distinctive markings help researchers and naturalists identify individual whales. And for guests aboard our tours, a fluke lifting out of the water before a deep dive is one of the most unforgettable sights of the summer.

They never fail to take our breath away, and they’re one of the most frequent (and most loved!) moments we share on the Salish Sea.

Why do humpbacks travel together? 🐋🐋

While they’re typically more solitary than orcas, humpbacks are known to form temporary groups—especially when feeding or migrating. These loose associations can last for hours or days, and sometimes, they even dive in sync.

That fluke you see? It means a deep dive is coming—often in search of food far below the surface.

Want to witness this behaviour firsthand? Join us on the water this season.
