Sitting at breakfast overlooking Ol Pejeta, enjoying the cool morning before heading north today.

Yesterday’s game drive was full of wildlife, all types of antelope, towers of giraffe as well as up close encounters with elephants and a lioness. (Still searching for a male!)

Also visited the Chimpanzee sanctuary opened by Jane Goodall during the war in Burundi, to rescue the Chimps.

The highlight for sure of the day was seeing the last 2 Northern White Rhino on the planet. Mother and daughter Najin and Fatu, along with their Southern White Rhino companion that has taught them how to be wild.

Steve had a slight moment of worry when one of the temperamental Rhinos came within feet of the truck, and decided to rub her horn on the tires. I was more concerned when we surprised the elephants.

Onward today to Samburu, to find my elusive male lion and search for the “Special 5”!

For all you bird lovers, I didn’t want to forget to tell you about Lake Elementeita!

This was our “half way” stop getting from Maasai Mara to Ol Pejeta, and such a surprise!

The Serena Camp at Lake Elementeita has a beautiful view of the lake, offers plenty of amenities (including hair dryer - just saying girls..) and is an all-inclusive resort.

The lake itself is known for the huge flocks of flamingos as well as many migratory birds. Surrounding the lake are yellow barked acacia trees which are stunning to see up close and make an excellent backdrop for photos. We also ran into giraffes on the lake road, and saw our first zebras fighting for dominance in the herd.

Other than the wildlife and lake views, what really makes your stay at Serena is the staff. Absolutely amazing in every way, anticipating your needs and remembering one small bit of a conversation to surprise you later on. All meals were à la carte with fixed menus, but great variety.

Definitely a camp worth revisiting!

It’s almost Rhino time!

One of the areas I’ve been most excited to visit is Ol Pejeta, and we’ve just arrived at our camp, Maisha Sweetwaters for the next two nights.

Ol Pejeta has the Big 5, plus the highest Rhino population of any of the parks in Kenya. We have a full day game drive tomorrow but just coming into the camp we found 8 or 9 Southern White Rhinos and a lone Black Rhino, viewing from the road.

On our game drive we’ll be visiting the sanctuary to see Najin and Fatu, the last two Northern White Rhinos on the planet.

We’ll also check out the chimpanzee sanctuary, and try our luck tracking more lions and if lucky, a leopard.

Time to settle in and charge some batteries!

Spent the last two nights at Maisha Mara Camp, just outside Tarek gate to the Maasai Mara Reserve. This is a full service tented camp, hot showers and in tent plumbing!

Learned a lot about Maasai culture, and a lot about the habits and animals of the Mara.

We managed to track down two different prides of lions, one cheetah, plenty of buffalo, giraffe everywhere, wildebeest, hartebeest and antelope. (Day 5 and I can finally identify Thompson Gazelle, Topi, and Impala, plus male or female - but still so many more!)

Experienced a bush lunch under an acacia tree, saw hippos, crocs and hyena too.

Also I have never been so dusty in my life, but would do it all again.

Tomorrow we head to Ol Pejeta, an afternoon off the game drive but hoping Wednesday brings rhino sightings and if we’re lucky, a leopard!

We had an excellent final night at Hildana! By mid-afternoon, all other guests had checked out so we were amazed to find out we had the entire lodge to ourselves! Talk about feeling like royalty!

We’re back in Nairobi for a night before continuing onwards to Masai Mara for the next part of our journey. We hope to catch the end of migration so I expect it to be a very busy 2 days compared to the tranquility of Hildana.

With better connectivity tonight, I thought you might appreciate a little bit more of the red elephants of Tsavo and Taita Hills.

Everyone wants to be first to the pool, if you watch to the end I hope you enjoy the antics of the little man as much as I did.

As we get ready for our last game drive at Hildana Lodge, I am amazed at the wildlife we’ve seen in the last 30 hours.

Not only the spectacular sightings while out with our guide Gladys, but literally at every meal or while lounging by the pool we’ve counted hundreds of elephants, zebra, buffalo, gazelle, birds, dik dik, warthogs and this morning, the cheetah brothers who haven’t been spotted in a long while.

Can’t wait to share video when we have better connection.

Jambo from Kenya!

After a 3:00am hotel check in and a quick 5hr nap we were off to Giraffe Centre. Got to feed Eddie, Daisy and the gang followed by a short little nature walk on the skirts of Nairobi National Park.

Back to the bustling core to shop for drinks and snacks (safari essentials!) before our 6am departure to Taita tomorrow.

First impressions of Kenya coming from a first time visitor to Africa, Nairobi with over 8 million people is surprisingly modern, very secure and people are incredibly welcoming.

I’m excited to share my once-in-a-lifetime safari journey with you as we travel through 5 distinct parts of this beautiful country. Now time to rest up!
