On Haida Gwaii, black bears spend a surprising amount of time feeding along beaches; crabs, fish, shellfish, whatever the tide leaves behind. Quiet, efficient, and very good at minding their own business.

Haida Gwaii black bears are considered a distinct subspecies and are among the largest in Canada, helped by abundant food sources and generations of island isolation.

You usually hear (or smell) them before you see them. Steller sea lions, the largest sea lion species on Earth, can weigh over 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs). And somehow they still manage to nap piled on top of each other like oversized wet dogs.

We're lucky to spot them in many different places in Gwaii Haanas.

There’s something surreal about seeing an animal the size of a bus feed on some of the smallest creatures in the ocean.

Humpbacks can consume over a tonne of food a day during feeding season. Big animal. Tiny snacks.

Soft moss, dripping cedars, and the heavy salt-and-cedar air of the coast. Some mosses can hold up to 20x their weight in water, acting like giant natural sponges for the forest.

These mossy vistas are relatively new to Haida Gwaii. The introduction of Sitka black-tailed deer over 100 years ago dramatically changed the forest understory, reducing much of the dense vegetation and allowing mosses to thrive across the landscape.

Anywhere deer can’t reach, the forest floor often looks completely different.

Four days on the edge of land and sea.
Time is measured by tides, light, and weather.

Our 4-Day Gwaii Haanas Tour is an invitation to slow down and truly be here. To travel through ancient coastlines, witness wildlife in its own rhythm, and share moments that stay long after you return home.

Have you been on a 4-day tour with us? Does this video bring back memories?

This video was created by Josiah Fennell with West Gale Productions, a local videographer and filmmaker on Haida Gwaii. Thank you, Josiah.

It’s been a while.

About 100 days, give or take.
No dramatic reason — we just took a proper break, did some real work, and spent more time outside than online.

Haida Gwaii just went through a wild weather swing — heavy snow followed by a rapid temperature rise and a lot of rain. Some roads are closed, with widespread washouts. It’s likely there have been significant changes in parts of Gwaii Haanas as a result.

Wishing everyone happy holidays from the coast. Thanks for sticking around — or wandering back — and for being patient with us.

We’re getting excited about 2026 and what’s ahead.

Humpback whales performing a hull inspection on our float camp supply boat today.

Once nearly wiped out, humpback whales are making a stunning comeback in the Pacific Northwest. From just a few hundred, to thousands today, their return is a powerful story of resilience and conservation. Big Mama and her growing family are leading the way.

As always, we follow all guidelines while boating around these wonderful creatures, sometimes we get extremely lucky and they come to us.
