Manidoonsag Imaa Mikinaako-Minisiing, is a mural in Selkirk commemorating the history and legacy of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls & Two-Spirited.

And today, October 4, is National Day of Action, to honour the lives of +. The mural was created to be a space for gathering, reflection and healing. Swipe to see a small collection of photos of the mural located behind the Gaynor Family Library.

About the mural:
🟠Double sided, interactive, amphitheater shaped that measures over 2000sf or 70ft in diameter. Each panel is 32ft in length.
🟠4 sections composed to align with the journey of the cycle of life and a Spiritual Path of the Indigenous People of Turtle Island.
🟠Each panel aligns with the 4 directions of traditional teachings: Stages of Life Creation, Dance of Life, Journey of Exiting Life, and the Spirit World.

October 4 is the National Day of Action to honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Gender-Diverse, Two-Spirit, and Transgender people, also known as Sisters in Spirit Day.

Join the The Selkirk Friendship Centre for an evening of remembrance, action, and healing at the Gaynor Family Regional Library on Sunday, October 4. The evening will feature guest speakers, tipi and medicine teachings, traditional youth dancers, Selkirk women drum group, and light refreshments.

If you're unable to attend, please take the time to learn about Manidoonsag Imaa Mikinaako-Minisiing, a mural dedication to at the Gaynor Family Library.

Led by a personal guide, this 90-minute walking tour takes you through the grounds as you hear stories shared by residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors over the years. You'll hear tales of murders and su***de to tragic accidents, and more.

4 Ways to Spend National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 in Red River North:

1. Reconciliation Ceremony (Selkirk Park)

The gathering features official greetings, a guest speaker, a Knowledge Keeper, traditional drumming, and Fancy Shawl & Jingle dancing.

2. Reconciliation Ceremony (VIllage of Dunnottar)
Meet at the Milne/Matlock Beach parking lot for a brief 10-minute walk to the park. Gathering at Spirit Park (located at 30 Reid Drive). The ceremony features drumming, traditional teachings, and community.

3. Learn about Chanie Wenjack’s Story (The Secret Path)
📍176 Main St, Selkirk
Chanie Wenjack was a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy from the Marten Falls First Nation, who died in 1966 after escaping the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School. Listen to the album, read the graphic novel andwatc hthe an animated television film.

The 16th annual Rotary Club of Selkirk Manitoba Book Sale is back, Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, with over 20,000 books waiting to be discovered! From children’s stories to cookbooks, hardcovers, and bestsellers. You never know what you’ll find!

Not only is it the perfect chance to stock up on great reads, but every purchase helps support local community projects.

Books are priced at $2 each (unless otherwise marked), children’s books are $1, and bestsellers or new releases may be slightly higher. This is a cash only event. Bring your own bags!

Do you know Chanie Wenjack’s story?

Chanie Wenjack was a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy from the Marten Falls First Nation, who died in 1966 after escaping the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School. Chanie’s home was 400 miles away. He didn’t know that and tragically succumbed to due weather and starvation. He was discovered with only a windbreaker for warmth and a jar of half a dozen unused wooden matches.

Gord Downie (Canadian musician, writer, poet, and activist) was introduced to Chanie’s story by his brother Mike, who shared with him Ian Adams’ Maclean’s article from 1967, “The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.” Chanie’s story is one that struck deep with Downie that he created a series of poems which were then fleshed into a ten-song album called the Secret Path. The album was accompanied by a graphic novel and an animated television film aired on CBC Television.

We encourage you to visit this mural, read the graphic novel, listen to the album, and watch the animated film to learn about Chanie Wenjack story.

Thank you to Elder Ruth Christie, Ashley Christiansen, Lizanne Laurin and Bobbie Sinclair who designed and brought this mural to life.
