HX Roald Amundsen Day 4 - Klawock, Alaska. Population 720 from the 2020 census; located on Prince of Wales Island. Tenders were used to bring us to and from the pier.

I chose the included excursion called Highlights of Klawock. Our first stop was a visit to a Łingít shelter that was constructed and deconstructed each time the tribe moved from the summer camp to the winter camp. A walk through the rainforest ended along the Klawock River just downstream from the hatchery. From here we visited Totem Park which is the site of 21 authentic totems selected from the region. The local guide told stories and the history of most of them. Each descendant is a member of either the Raven or Eagle tribes, which can be seen on the totems.

There was just enough time left to take the bus down to the town of Craig (population 1036 in 2020) for a pizza lunch and a quick visit to the gift store. All aboard time was 5pm and my dinner was at 6:15. Another great day in Alaska!

HX Roald Amundsen Day 3 Misty Fjords & Day 5 Kuiu Islands. My very first time on a Zodiac and had no idea what to expect. I had so much fun, even in the misty rain in the Misty Fjords! In Alaska only USA certified Zodiac drivers are allowed. They are all professional and very knowledgeable about the area we are visiting. The smaller groups are called down in 10 minute intervals and everyone shows up in life jackets and boots ready to go. Each Zodiac excursion was about an hour long.

HX Roald Amundsen Day 2- at sea. I want to talk about this ship and HX as a company. HX Explorations is a sustainable company adhering to the many global policies in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. "Travel with purpose, perspective and a deep respect for the planet". Roald Amundsen is one of two Hybrid ships in the fleet. There are no single use plastics and every guest is given a water bottle to fill at water stations throughout the ship. Food waste is measured and managed with a weekly report to the passengers. Every day that you say no to housekeeping in your cabin is extra money towards the HX Foundation.

Enjoy these photos taken as we sailed between Campbell River and Port Hardy on our way to Misty Fjords. We are starting to see some wildlife - humpback whales, bald eagles and more. I was up before the first official Wildlife Watch Party this morning and saw a black bear.

Our first day is full of activity. The art room opened to personalize our water bottles if we wished, followed by a photography seminar and a mandatory kayak info session for those wanting to kayak. Then lunch, jacket pick-up/exchange, time in the science lab, another Wildlife Watch party, rubber boot pick-up, Captain's greeting and dinner. To cap off every evening we learn about plans for tomorrow, have a drink in the lounge and off to bed!

To keep crowds at a minimum in the dining room, dining times vary depending on the day and to which group you are assigned. To prevent chaos in the launch zone, each core group of 4 is then divided into another group of 4.

Join me on my adventure aboard the HX Expedition Roald Amundsen as we sail into Alaska. This isn't your everyday 7-day roundtrip to Juneau and back. No, this is expedition at its finest! HX is celebrating 130 years this year and they know what they are doing. Our itinerary includes Misty Fjord, College Fjord, Icy Bay, the Inian Islands and the bustling villages of Kake, Klowack and Craig along with a visit to Valdez before disembarking in Whittier and a flight home from Anchorage.

Day 1 - All aboard in Vancouver. This is the smallest ship I have been on - a maximum capacity of only 490 passengers; we are sailing with around 400 I believe. These pictures are of my first look inside as we enter the ship though the Science Lab. This is what expedition is all about - Science! There are scientists and a full team of Expedition Staff front and centre to answer all and any questions, to lead wildlife discussions and wildlife watches out on deck, present science seminars and spend time in the lab with microscopes looking at samples brought on board from the science boats in the morning.

This is Alaska as most of us have never seen it. Up close and personal with wildlife and nature. Journey along with me and Lynn Rempel!
