Meet Maya Cowpar-Mark!

Maya is Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Cree, and Haida from the (Ts’aahl) Kayahl ‘Laanas Eagle Clan. Raised between her mother’s Nisga’a roots and her father’s Haida heritage, she has been fortunate to learn from the traditions, stories, and values of both Nations from an early age. These teachings, shared by her family, elders, and matriarchs, continue to shape her passion for sharing culture in a meaningful and respectful way.

Her passion for tourism and culinary arts led her to complete a Diploma in Tourism Marketing and Management at BCIT in 2023. Since then, Maya has taken on an increasingly active role in the family business, contributing to marketing, logistics, operations, and guiding. She is passionate about creating authentic visitor experiences while bringing a fresh perspective to the company.

Outside of Haida Gwaii, Maya has a passion for exploring the world and learning from other cultures. Having recently traveled throughout Europe and New Zealand, she has experienced firsthand how travel creates meaningful connections between people and communities.

Meet Captain Robert Russ!

Rob is from the K’aadaas Gaa K’iigawaay clan of T’aanuu Llnagaay, his traditional home and territory, and his Haida name is Gyahgujaang.

His educational background in natural resource management, fisheries, and wildlife, combined with his cultural teachings and experience on the land and water, makes for an informative and meaningful experience for guests.

He enjoys sharing stories and knowledge about the past, present, and future of the Haida Nation, while offering guests a deeper understanding of the lands and waters they are travelling through.

“T’aanuu Llnagaay is my traditional home and territory. It’s always good to go home.”

An outgoing and mindful captain, Rob is full of stories and experiences from all around Haida Gwaii, both above and below the water. When guests are ashore, you may even find him putting his BBQ skills to work and preparing a delicious lunch for the group.

Rob has extensive experience as a captain and has been part of the Haida Style Expeditions team for almost ten years. His knowledge, humour, cultural connection, and genuine care for the waters of Haida Gwaii make him a valued member of our team.

Meet Rhonda Russ Gul Jaad K’uuk Skadjuuwa

Cultural Guide

Working in the ancestral lands of her husband, Robert Russ, has deepened her understanding of how ecotourism, cultural preservation, and stewardship come together on the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii. As a guide and first aider, she works alongside our captains, the Haida Gwaii Watchmen, and community partners to create engaging, inclusive experiences that connect guests to these incredible places. Her warm smile, thoughtful storytelling, and genuine passion make every tour memorable.

Her education and experiences studying across Canada and abroad deepened her passion for community, resilience, and sharing the value of indigenous knowledge with every guest.

Rhonda is a Caribou Clan member of the Anishnaubeg Nation of Saugeen in Savant Lake, Ontario, and an adopted member of the K’awaas Eagle Clan from Kuista. She was gifted the name Gul Jaad K’uuk Skadjuuwa by her late clan matriarch Leona Clow.

When she’s not guiding, you’ll find her at the local library, creating beadwork, writing, fishing, supporting literacy and arts events, or enjoying a good powwow and ceremony.

Meet Xiila-T’aayii Guujaaw!

Xiila is a proud member of the (Ts’aahl) Ḵayahl ‘Laanas Eagle Clan and was raised with a deep connection to the lands, waters, and traditions of Haida Gwaii. She joined Haida Style in 2018 as a student guide and, through her passion for sharing Haida culture, has grown into the role of Lead Guide, a position she has held since 2022.

As Lead Guide, Xiila mentors many of our newer guides, sharing her cultural knowledge, professionalism, and passion for tourism. Her warmth, humour, and authenticity inspire both guests and colleagues, ensuring every experience reflects the living traditions and values of the Haida people.
We are so lucky to have Xiila on the team as our lead cultural guide!
