Sooke's 1st Witches on Water WOW is happening Saturday, October 3rd at Whiffin Spit, and we want YOU paddling (or watching from shore) in your spookiest, sparkliest costume!

🧹🛶 Witches on Water is coming to Whiffin Spit and Seagull Studio is cauldron-deep in it! 🎃

Seagull Studio has always been part of the heart of Sooke, BC and this year we're brewing up something extra spooky-fun. We're thrilled to be cohosting our very FIRST Witches on Water (WoW) event alongside the amazing Sooke Chamber of Commerce, and it's all in support of a cause close to our hearts: the Sooke Food Bank! 💚

Here's the magic: grab your paddleboard or hop in a canoe, throw on your best witch costume, and paddle your broomstick (er… board) around stunning Whiffin Spit for a day of pure Sooke Harbour whimsy. Not a water witch? No worries, there are prizes for our favourite land-based witches too!

E-bikes, ocean views, and one very happy guest 🚴‍♀️

We love hearing how our guests choose to explore Sooke, and this week's story might be our new favourite. One of our recent Seagull Studio guests rented e-bikes in Victoria and rode the entire Galloping Goose Trail out to Sooke, taking in farmland, forest, trestle bridges, and glimpses of the Strait of Juan de Fuca along the way. They rolled in tired, sun-kissed, and absolutely glowing about the adventure.

It's one of our favourite reminders of why people keep coming back to Sooke: there's always another way to fall in love with this place. Whether you're a serious cyclist or just want a scenic, low-effort ride with big payoff, the Galloping Goose is one of the most beautiful (and easiest) ways to get from Victoria to Sooke and Seagull Studio is the perfect place to rest up after.

Living on Vancouver Island, you learn fast: BC Ferries isn't just transportation, it's basically a member of the family. ⛴️
Every crossing between the Island and the mainland carries more than passengers. It's how our groceries, building supplies, mail, and pretty much everything else makes it here. When the wind picks up and sailings get cancelled, the whole Island feels it and that's how much we lean on this lifeline. 🛟
And here's the thing about that ride: somewhere between Tsawwassen (or Swartz Bay) and home, something shifts. You watch the mainland shrink behind you, grab a coffee on the top deck, spot an eagle or a pod of orcas if you're lucky, and by the time you roll off the ramp, your shoulders have dropped two inches. That's not a coincidence. That's Island Time setting in. Science, probably. 😄

So next time your sailing gets bumped a wait or two, take a breath, and remember: you're not stuck, you're just... arriving slowly. That's the whole point of living here.

🦌 Breaking News from the front lawn: our resident doe and her fawn have officially declared the garden Sooke's finest (and only) reservation-free salad bar. Tip optional ... though they will happily accept your hostas as payment.🥹

This is hands-down our favourite time of year, when the neighbourhood wildlife comes out to remind us who actually owns the property. Enjoy the peaceful grazing while it lasts once the rut kicks in (mid-October through December), the drama levels go way up and the lawn snacks turn into full-blown deer soap opera.

Our tip? September might be Sooke's best-kept secret. The gardens are still in bloom, the days are warm enough for a coastal walk, and the evenings cool down just enough to justify a fire in the fireplace and a glass of Pinot Noir on the patio. Summer coastal walks, cozy nights create the best of both worlds.

☀️🌱 Huge glow-up for the driveway garden bed! After 2 years of sifting, cleaning, and clearing out every last stone,rock and root, we finally got it prepped with fresh mulch and rich topsoil, and wow, does it feel good to see a blank canvas ready for planting again. 🙌

There's something so satisfying about starting from truly clean soil. This little strip is about to go from "meh" to serious curb appeal, and we can't wait to show you what goes in next. Stay tuned! 👇
