Meet Axel!
Back for his second season with St. John’s Walking Tours, Axel brings a truly unique perspective to our team. With a Master’s in Physical Oceanography from Memorial University, he studied ocean acoustics - or as he likes to call it, “the music of the ocean.” 🌊🎵

It’s no surprise then that his favourite stop is O’Brien’s Music Store - the oldest shop on the oldest street in St. John’s. For Axel, it’s the perfect place to share how Newfoundland’s deep Irish roots shaped our folk traditions, from the ugly stick to mummering to the story behind the Ode to Newfoundland.

A favourite line of his? “And I’ll stay and take my chances with those saltwater joys.”

Co-founder of St. John’s Walking Tours and our Marketing Director, Melissa has been with us since day one, shaping both our routes and our stories.

By day, she’s a full-time web developer. By night, she’s a travel blogger, exploring the world and bringing that same curiosity back home. She’s even tobogganed down the side of an active volcano in Central America - which is almost as thrilling as guiding our Food Tour.

Her favourite stop? The touton & molasses tasting, where she gets to share one of her favourite quirky bits of Newfoundland history: how margarine nearly kept us out of Confederation.

Melissa lives by the words, “You don’t have to be the first at something to be the best.” Come join her for a tour and see how she makes history, food, and folklore come alive. 👣

Come down and have a great breakfast scoff at the nicest little pub in town before checking out the games this week and next.

🥳 Attention all service staff, volunteers, athletes, employees, visitors and absolutely anyone that has anything to do with the ! 🥳

We know that the & is a major hub of the games , so we've decided to open up for breakfast from 10am to 12pm! 👍 (you might get served tea or coffee in one of our infamous cat mugs 👀)

In our experience, when events like these are time sensitive for people attending and working, the time spent trying to have a meal is very quick. Because of this, our breakfast menu is limited. But have no fear, you'll still enjoy it and you'll have lots of time to manage the games on your time.

The Embassy family is incredibly excited about this event heading to our beautiful city. If you find the time, come by and check out why they call us the friendliest little pub in the North Atlantic! 🍻

Tyra is from a small town in Central Newfoundland, Northern Arm, about five hours from St. John's. She moved to St. John's in 2018 to attend Memorial University, where she earned a BA in French and Folklore in 2022, and she has stuck to city life ever since! Tyra is very creative and a lover of art, history, spooky stories, and can "spin a yarn" with anyone. In fact, her work in culture and tourism has lead to her connecting with many throughout the years, including a rocking conversation with ZZ Top, well, on top of Signal Hill.

Meet your guide, David Peters! Now in his third year with St. John’s Walking Tours, David brings a passion for history, politics, and storytelling to every walk through the city. A fun fact about him - he was the Green Party of Canada candidate for St. John’s East in both the 2015 and 2019 federal elections.

His favourite tour stop is the Anglican Cathedral, a place that pushes him to unpack the complex legacy of Christianity in Newfoundland. For David, it’s a chance to explore how religious institutions played an outsized role in transforming this land - from an Indigenous homeland to a colony, and eventually, a country.

Meet Pierre! Owner, founder, and all-around legend behind St. John’s Walking Tours.

When he’s not guiding curious minds through downtown St. John’s, you’ll probably find him pedalling across the globe. No joke! Pierre recently spent three months cycling over 3,000 km through Patagonia. 🚴‍♂️🌎

He’s been with the company since day one, helping shape the stories we share on every tour. Ask him about his favourite stop, the Colonial Building - he’s got a treasure trove of quirky, unexpected tales up his sleeve.
