St. Marys Community Players

St. Marys Community Players Community theatre group with dedicated volunteers producing quality productions to entertain and enlighten the community. Theatre in St. Marys Little Theatre.

Marys began in the late 1940's with Rev. Parson's rendition of The Desert Song. There were only three costumes rented for that production, as more than 60 volunteers from St. Marys and area designed, cut and sewed the rest of the costumes from old drapes, curtains and sheets (it sounds as if they took a page from Scarlett O'Hara's 'cape from the drapes' in Gone With the Wind!). The performance of

The Desert Song was a huge success, releasing the "theatre bug" into the town and ultimately leading to the formation of the St. After setting the goal of their membership campaign at 1000, the group was no doubt delighted when the first day found 800 signed on and a full waiting list by the end of the week! Successful dramas filled the next ten years, some good enough to compete in the prestigious Dominion Drama Festivals. The advent of television stole the attention from live theatre and a talented theatre community lay dormant. It wasn't until October of 1974 that the Little Theatre was re-born as St. Marys Community Players. Since that time, the group has produced years of excellent comedies, dramas and musicals, including Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Guys & Dolls, Music Man, On Golden Pond, The Odd Couple, The Mouse Trap, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Mame and many others. [For more recent productions, see the Photos of Past Productions page link at the top of this page.]

In 1981, a contest was held to design a logo for SMCP. Peggy McQuirk's logo was outstanding in combining the theatre mask with the letters in our name

Community Players is blessed with a host of dedicated people who offer their talents in production areas such as producing and administration, costuming, hair design, set design, construction, decoration and "front-of-house" ushering and ticket selling. These jobs are every bit as important to the success of any production as the more obvious directors, actors and musicians. The door is always open to anyone who is interested in taking part in community theatre in St. Marys. Come on out to audition for a role, help backstage (where another "show" simultaneously goes on quietly in the dark!), or join the audience. Whatever your choice, we feel sure that you will enjoy the experience.

Meet the Cast of SMCP's Fall Production: Norm Foster's Hilda's Yard!

Step into the delightful world of 1956 with Hilda's Yard, a charming play that humorously explores the lives of Hilda (Edie Pedersen) and Sam Fluck (Don Van Galen) as they embrace the joys of being empty-nesters. However, their peaceful existence takes a comedic turn when their grown children unexpectedly return home, turning their plans upside down!

As Sam revels in his new television set, daughter Janey (Alex Pedersen) struggles with her tumultuous marriage, and son Gary (Matt Schell) finds himself pursued by the romantic loan shark thug, Beverly Woytowich (Derek Roberts), due to an unpaid loan. To top it all off, Gary's trombone-playing girlfriend, Bobbi Jakes (Sarah Nixon), makes a surprise appearance at dinner, filling Hilda's backyard with unexpected guests. Norm Foster brilliantly intertwines humour and heartfelt moments, making this play a must-see!

Don't Miss the Fun!
Directed by Manu and produced by Marie Stevens and Stephen Brockwell , performances will kick off on October 16 and continue through November 2, 2025, at the Town Hall Theatre in the Town of St. Marys . Join us for an evening of laughter and unforgettable moments!

Exciting casting news is just around the corner as we gear up to announce the talented cast of our Fall show, 'Hilda's Yard', a delightful comedy by Norm Foster!

Set in 1956, this charming play offers a humorous glimpse into the lives of Hilda and Sam Fluck, who navigate the joys of empty-nester happiness, only to have their plans hilariously disrupted when their grown children unexpectedly return home. With Sam's new TV, daughter Janey's rocky marriage, a romantic loan shark thug chasing son Gary's unpaid loan, and next-door neighbour, Mrs. Lidstrom, Hilda'a backyard quickly fills up as Foster masterfully weaves together humour and heartfelt moments.

Don't miss out on the laughter! Directed by Costin Manu and produced by Marie Stevens and Stephen Brockwell, performances begin October 15th and run through November 2nd, 2025, at the Town Hall Theatre in the Town of St. Marys !

Are you our Beverly Woytowich?
SMCP's fall production of Norm Foster's classic comedy, Hildaโ€™s Yard is looking for our thug-with-a-heart, Beverly Woytowich, 'male supporting' character in his late 30's, early 40's, exuding an aura of enigmatic charm. As a nefarious gangster-type, Brother Gary has an outstanding gambling debt with Beverly. Intelligent, well spoken, and secretly kind for a โ€œthugโ€, he is smitten with Janey, Hilda and Sam's daughter, which adds a captivating layer of complexity to his persona, making him a compelling and multi-dimensional character.
Hildaโ€™s Yard. A life view from a Wife and Husband, a new TV, empty nester happiness, then, LITERALLY, your two grown-up kids fall back, over the fence, into your yard, your new life, with issues.

Directed by Costin Manu, produced by Marie Stephens and Stephen Brockwell, with Set Design by Ray Doerksen, this production is guaranteed to be a winner.

Performances begin October 15th to November 2nd, 2025

And just like that......

The Gianelli living room is now theatrical history. This family living room truly became a character of its ownโ€”full of heart, tradition, and laughter. We laughed, cried and danced! Over the River and Through the Woods captured the warmth and complexity of family life so well, and saying goodbye to that familiar space feels like parting with an old friend.

Our family-focused 51st season continues this fall in a whole new settingโ€”Hilda and Sam Fluckโ€™s backyard! Itโ€™s an exciting summer day in 1956 for Hilda and Sam. Newly on their own since their thirtysomething children Gary and Janey moved out, they are finally ready to relax. Hilda plans to hang her laundry while Sam goes to buy a shiny new television. What could disturb their simple peace?

See you in October with SMCP's production of Norm Foster's "Hilda's Yard".

Performances begin October 15th to November 2nd, 2025
