WestJet Completes Integration of Sunwing Airlines – New Booking and Baggage Rules Apply
As of May 29, WestJet Group has officially completed the integration of Sunwing Airlines, two years after the merger was first announced and just months after absorbing Swoop in early 2024. This milestone unifies all jet aircraft operations under one Air Operator Certificate (AOC), including 18 aircraft from Sunwing, 16 from Swoop, and 9 from the now-defunct Lynx Air.
“This marks a major transformation in Canadian aviation,” said WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. “Our integrated team has created new opportunities for value and efficiency in the leisure travel market.”
Key Changes for Travellers and Travel Advisors
With the merger finalized, all flights—whether booked through Sunwing Vacations or WestJet Vacations—now follow WestJet’s operational and baggage policies. Notably:
• Booking & Check-in: A WestJet PNR (Passenger Name Record) code is now required for check-in. This code will appear in the “My Booking” section five days prior to departure, with reminder emails sent 72 and 24 hours before the flight.
• Baggage Fees: WestJet baggage rules now apply:
• One carry-on remains free.
• Checked bags are subject to fees:
• $35 + tax if added during booking or shortly after
• $45 if added within 24 hours of departure
• $55 if added at the airport check-in counter
Travellers booking Sunwing vacation packages should be aware that checked baggage is no longer included and must be purchased separately under WestJet’s fee structure.
The integration aims to streamline operations while enhancing options in the sun and leisure travel market. Cabin reconfigurations to align all aircraft with WestJet’s interior standards will continue into 2025.
