There are two kinds of travellers:

The ones who unpack immediately and make the hotel room feel like home.

And the ones who live out of their suitcase for the entire trip like a raccoon with a passport. 😄

I want to say I’m always the organized one…

But realistically, it depends on the trip, the room, how tired I am, and whether I can find the thing I need without creating a small clothing avalanche.

So now I need to know:

Are you an unpacker or a suitcase digger?

Thinking about a cruise, but not sure which style is right for you?

At our 5th Annual Island Travel Show, one of our featured sessions will explore some very different ways to cruise, from relaxed European river cruising to adults-only ocean escapes and music-filled sailings.

This session will feature:

🚢 River cruising with AmaWaterways
🎶 Music-themed cruises
🌊 Virgin Voyages
⚓ Cruise getaway ideas

If you’ve been curious about river cruising, wondering what makes Virgin Voyages different, or looking for a cruise experience that feels more tailored to your interests, this is a great session to attend.

Cruising has changed a lot over the years. It’s no longer one-size-fits-all. There are options for food lovers, music lovers, active travellers, relaxed travellers, couples, friends, solo travellers, and people who want to unpack once while still seeing more of the world.

Join us at the Island Travel Show on Saturday, June 13 to learn more, ask questions, and maybe discover the cruise style that fits you best.

Happy 25th birthday to my son, Devon. 🥳

Back in 2008, we took our first family cruise. Devon was 6 (almost 7), and it was full of firsts for him.

First big trip.
First time on a plane.
First cruise.
First taste of just how much there is to see beyond home.

One of our first stops was San Juan, Puerto Rico, where we visited the fort and learned about its history, including pirates.

And from that point on, just about every time I asked Devon to pose for a photo, he would (without being asked or encouraged) crook one finger, close one eye, and give me his best:

“ARRGH.” 🏴‍☠️

Not a smile.
Not a normal tourist pose.
A full pirate commitment.

Honestly, iconic.

These are the travel memories I love most. Not the perfectly posed ones, but the funny little moments that become family legend (and we STILL laugh about fondly).

Devon’s travel style may be a little more “can we drive there?” these days, but I’ll always treasure this first big adventure and the tiny pirate who made every photo better.

Happy birthday, Devon. Love you so much. ❤️

Explore Canada Series: New Brunswick 🇨🇦

New Brunswick is one of those places people sometimes underestimate.

Which is exactly why it can surprise you.

It has dramatic coastlines, charming towns, incredible seafood, covered bridges, coastal drives, and some of the most impressive tides in the world.

You can wander Saint Andrews by-the-Sea, explore the Bay of Fundy, visit Hopewell Rocks, take the scenic Fundy Trail Parkway, go whale watching, or simply build a beautiful little road trip with good food, ocean air, and plenty of stops along the way.

And honestly? There is something lovely about a trip that does not have to be complicated to feel special.

Sometimes the best escapes are closer than we think.

New Brunswick is a beautiful reminder that Canada has so many places worth slowing down for.

River cruising is one of those travel styles that people are often curious about… and once they try it, they understand why people fall in love with it.

Unpack once.
Wake up somewhere new.
Enjoy beautiful scenery right from the ship.
Step into charming towns, historic cities, vineyards, markets, and cultural experiences along the way.

It’s travel that feels relaxed, but still rich with things to see and do.

That’s one of the reasons I love AmaWaterways. Their river cruises are thoughtfully designed for travellers who want comfort, great food, meaningful excursions, and a smooth way to explore multiple places without constantly repacking a suitcase.

And when it comes to river cruising, planning ahead really does matter.

Popular itineraries, preferred dates, and well-located staterooms can book up early, especially for special sailings, wine cruises, Christmas markets, and bucket-list routes.

So if river cruising has been quietly sitting on your “someday” list, this might be a lovely time to start looking at what that could become.

P.S. AmaWaterways will be joining us at the Island Travel Show on June 13, and yes… there is a free river cruise giveaway involved. A very good reason to come say hello. 😉

Apparently I’ve been preparing for travel days for a very long time. 😄

Tiny Heather.
Tiny lunchbox.
Big plans.

I have no idea where I thought I was going, but judging by the grip on that lunchbox, I was fully prepared with snacks.

Honestly, some things have not changed.

Whether it’s a road trip, airport day, walking tour, or long connection, I still believe snacks are an important part of the itinerary (just ask Larry and my kids). 😅

Because yes, I can help plan the flights, hotels, transfers, tours, and travel details…

But let’s be honest.

A well-timed snack can save the whole day. ✈️🥨

Hello June. ☀️

The month where everyone collectively starts saying things like:

“We should plan a road trip.”

“Let’s sit on a patio.”

“We need to go somewhere this summer.”

“I’m just going to check flights for fun.”

Which, let’s be honest, is how many excellent adventures begin. 😄

There’s something about June that makes travel feel possible again. Longer days, warmer evenings, weekend plans, and that little itch to go somewhere, even if it’s just a few hours away.

Here’s to more sunshine, more wandering, and maybe a few “just checking” travel searches that accidentally turn into real plans.

Sometimes the best trip planning doesn’t start with a destination.

It starts with a feeling.

Do you want to exhale?
Float for a while?
Reconnect?
Explore somewhere completely new?
Eat your way through a city?
Spend more time by the water?
Feel inspired again?
Have someone else handle the details for once?

That’s usually where the real magic begins.

Not with “what’s cheapest?” or “where is everyone else going?”

But with:

What do I actually need from this next trip?

A change of scenery.
A slower pace.
A little adventure.
A beautiful meal.
A reset.
A story to come home with.

So I’m curious…

What do you want your next trip to give you?

There are two kinds of travellers:

The ones who unpack immediately and make the hotel room feel like home.

And the ones who live out of their suitcase for the entire trip like a raccoon with a passport. 😄

I want to say I’m always the organized one…

But realistically, it depends on the length of trip, the room, how tired I am, and whether I can find the thing I need without creating a small clothing avalanche.

So are you an unpacker or a suitcase digger?
