The Canadian government announced plans for a new three-year immigration pilot designed to support the growth of Canada’s agri-food sector.

In its Budget 2019, released March 19, the Government of Canada stated,

“To help the agri-food sector meet Canada’s ambitious export targets and attract and retain needed labour, the federal government will launch a three-year immigration pilot to bring in full time, non-seasonal agricultural workers that will include a pathway to permanent residency.”

The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) supports the federal government’s plans. In an update, the CMC says it has been requesting 2,750 immigration spots to fill meat packers, meat processors and equipment supplier positions that have not been filled by Canadians.

According to Industry Canada’s ‘Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table’ report published September 2018, there is an alarming need to address the immediate labour shortages facing the agriculture sector and to utilize Canada’s permanent immigration and temporary foreign worker programs to attract workers across various skill levels.

Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-food system contributes $111 billion to the economy annually and $304 million per day.

The federal government’s immigration division, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has yet to announce details on the pilot.

New Brunswick’s Express Entry Labour Market Stream reopens to IT workers, others UPDATE: The temporary opening of this stream to candidates outlined in this story ended January 31
The Express Entry New Brunswick Labour Market Stream has temporarily reopened to Expressions of Interest from skilled workers with work experience in software engineering and nine other occupation categories.
In an update published January 30, the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP) reported that the stream is opening to those with work experience in one of the 10 following priority occupations:
• NOC 2173: Software engineers and designers
• NOC 2171: Information systems analysts and consultants
• NOC 2281: Computer network technician
• NOC 2172: Database analysts and data administrators
• NOC 2174: Computer programmers and interactive media developers
• NOC 6322: Cooks
• NOC 0631: Restaurant and food service managers
• NOC 1311: Accounting technicians and bookkeepers
• NOC 0311: Managers in health care
• NOC 6211: Retail sales supervisors
Potential applicants to this stream must also have attended one of the NBPNP’s information sessions in the previous 24 months.
Potential applicants are not required to have an existing profile in the federal Express Entry system but they will have to create one if they are successfully nominated by New Brunswick. As a result, the NBPNP will only consider potential applicants who score a minimum of 67 points out of 100 in the selection factors and meet the eligibility criteria for the Federal Skilled Worker Class.
This is the second opening of Express Entry New Brunswick Labour Market Stream since September 2017 that has targeted Information and Communications Technology workers, among others.
