Sea Otters, once extirpated in British Columbia waters, are making a huge comeback. The Nootka Sound area is an incredible place to see these creatures. A fully grown adult can grow as large as 45kg (100lbs) making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but also one of the smallest marine mammals.

Our European guests were treated with some active Humpbacks this morning.

Island of the Sea Wolves. Check that one off my photography bucket list. This coastal wolf pushed a small black bear off the beach as it made its entrance.

Recent guests were treated to a visual and audible experience recently by the Biggs Killer Whales, the T109As. While very stealthy while hunting, the Biggs are quite vocal during social times. With our hydrophone, we were able to eavesdrop on their conversations. Super, Natural British Columbia

What a place the west coast is. Biggs Killer Whales. The T109As showed raw beauty and power on a recent trip.

Humpback whales exhibit remarkably strong site fidelity to specific feeding and breeding grounds, often returning to the exact same bays and coastlines year after year. So far this summer, we’ve seen Wingtip (BCX2153) and Melty (BCZ0421) along with her new calf. Both Wingtip and Melty are returning whales to Nootka Sound.

Just learning about how rare this sighting of a Long Beaked Common Dolphin is in BC Waters. This porpoising was shot in September 2025 in the Tahsis Inlet.
