The ocean is a big part of why we love living and working here.

On World Oceans Day, weโ€™re thinking about everything beneath the surface that keeps this coastline thriving, from kelp forests and marine wildlife to the people and communities connected to the water every day.

Clayoquot Sound wouldnโ€™t be the same without a healthy ocean, and protecting it is something we all have a role in.

Today is World Environment Day, a reminder that protecting the planet starts with protecting the places closest to home.ย

Here in Clayoquot Sound, we see every day how connected we are to the environment around us: from old-growth rainforests and wild salmon rivers to the ocean wildlife that makes this coast so special.

As a destination built around adventure and connection to nature, we believe these places are worth protecting for generations to come. Through conservation partnerships, restoration initiatives, and everyday sustainable choices, weโ€™re committed to helping preserve the wild beauty of this region weโ€™re lucky to call home.

Because when we care for the environment, we care for the future of the coast itself.

Wild salmon are at the heart of the coast we call home.

On June 1, weโ€™re joining communities, organizations, and advocates around the world to celebrate , a day to recognize the importance of wild salmon and the urgent need to protect them for future generations.

Wild salmon are a keystone species and support ecosystems, wildlife, cultures, and coastal communities across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. By raising awareness we can help create a stronger future for salmon.

May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity, a reminder that the health of our planet depends on the diversity of life within it.

Here in Clayoquot Sound, that looks like interconnected ecosystems working together: old-growth rainforest filtering freshwater into the ocean, kelp forests creating habitat below the surface, and wildlife (from bears to whales) relying on it all to survive.

Protecting biodiversity here means protecting the systems that sustain life, both locally and far beyond the coast.

Today is World Endangered Species Day ๐ŸŒŽ

The waters of Clayoquot Sound are home to some of the most iconic and vulnerable species on the West Coast, including orcas.

Southern Resident killer whales are listed as endangered in Canada, with declining Chinook salmon populations posing one of their biggest threats. Offshore and Northern Resident populations are also considered at risk, while Biggโ€™s (transient) orcas (the ones mostly seen here in Tofino), often seen along the BC coast hunting seals and sea lions, have been showing signs of recovery.

Here on the coast, healthy salmon runs, eelgrass beds, kelp forests, and protected marine ecosystems all play a role in supporting the food web that whales depend on.

As part of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region, this place reminds us how connected everything is, from old-growth forests and salmon-bearing rivers to the open ocean.

Itโ€™s that time of year when all our crew start coming back from travelling, ski seasons, etc, and we couldnโ€™t be more excited!

All jokes aside, we actually had a beautiful winter, and canโ€™t wait for summer.
