What a way to celebrate my little sister’s 50th!! Spectacular day on the water and great fishing. Thanks for coming over to the island to celebrate. Salmon fishing followed by dinner at Church St. Grill, desert Blue Spruce Ice Cream 🍦 and backyard fire at the Rosyton Cabin.

Expedition Report: Yukon River, YK August 22-28.

Our third year back to the incredible and historic Yukon River. 220 kms from Lower Lake Laberge to Carmacks with our biggest group yet, 8 clients and 4 guides and all self supported. After a day in Whitehorse we started with a Kanoe People shuttle across the spectacular and challenging Lake Laberge and put in at the magical 30 mile section where the big lake empties.

We had a mixed bag of weather from warm days to fog and head winds but our crew crushed it, making each group campsite. The river was slightly slower this year but easily helped us make our distances. No moose this year but we had an amazing sighting of a Lynx close to camp 2 and had a Black Bear curiously watched us cruise by on our way to camp 4. Lots of bird activity with numerous Bald Eagles, families of Hooded Mergansers, Osprey and a group of Great Horned Owls hooted away though-out the night at camp 4 keeping us awake before our dawn patrol departure to beat some forecasted headwinds.

The Yukon River is such a fun, inspiring and fulfilling place to paddle. Big thanks to co guides Chris Smith Kalin Pallett and Jenni Bunyan for helping me to deliver another unique wilderness experience and being part of the expedition team. Cheers to Eddyline Outdoors for transportation and trip support. We are already looking forward to next year.

Expedition Report: Great Slave Lake, NWT August 12-18

What an absolutely incredible experience exploring the remote and spectacular East Arm of Great Slave Lake out of Yellowknife. It’s hard to explain the feeling I had when we were out there but it has something to do with the vastness of the water and spirit of the land and people, deep within the 3.9 billion year old rock of the Canadian Shield. I had a feeling of being home, as I grew up on the same ancient bedrock of the continent in Sudbury, Northern Ontario. The place reminded me of the north shore of Georgian Bay, most likely the feeling was true awe.

Float plane in and out, paddling under red rock cliffs that rose from the crystal clear depths of the great lake, magical northern lights, world class lake trout fishing from the decks of our boards, momma bears and cubs, Golden Eagles, Western Loon escorts, and quiet, reflective moments camping on the rock with the amazing and caring crew we had were just a few of the experiences and highlights this past week.

Big thanks to Dan Wong Jackpine Paddle for the partnership and setting up this incredible expedition. You have a first class operation in the north and a special team of guides. And cheers to my superstar co guide, Chase Edgerton for supporting our trip via solo canoe and for the outstanding meals you provided our group and magic with the dutch oven. Having that shore lunch with our fresh caught lake trout was a personal highlight, that fish was so good and took me@back to the same memories fishing at my grandfathers camp on the Wahnapitae River. I appreciated your humour, conversation, care for others, experience and spirit of exploration.

Thanks to the lands and waters of the Dene people “land of the ancestors.” Thanks to the amazing people who trusted me and joined me for this first commercial expedition here. I am always grateful for the opportunity to guide and lead others in wild places.

With a day and a half back home for my birthday it’s wheels up today to Whitehorse for our Yukon River trip.

TRIP REPORT: KITASOO EXPEDITION
16 years ago I paddled up to the Big House in Klemtu on my Standup4Greatbear Expedition and I was honored to be back on the lands and waters of the Kitasoo Xai Xais with our expedition crew. After a three hour drive from Royston to Port Hardy it was another 8hrs on the BC Ferry north to Klemtu. Once there we spent our first night at the spectacular Spirit Bear Lodge before departing early the following morning to circumnavigate Swindle Island.

Day 1: 22km to our first campsite in Myers Pass and where I stayed on my Standup4Great Bear Expedition before paddling into Klemtu. The massive cedar tree I camped under was still there.

Day 2: 29km Following the traditional trading route the Kitasoo Xais Xai would use to access Kitasu Bay we visited ancient pictographs and petroglyph sites before making our way across Gitdisdzu Lugyeks (Kitasu Bay) to Juxwada. Clarke Robinson took me to Juxwada for lunch after paddling from Aristazabal Island taking me through his territory explaining the importance of Kitasu Bay to the Klemtu people (May 2010).
The location was so beautiful I vowed to come back to camp. It took 16 years but we made it back and spent a magical Fathers Day (just missing my son Kiel & Jen) and summer solstice watching the sun set.

Day 3: 30km On the outside of Swindle Island and along big wave coastline we entered thick fog for 2hrs. We made our way, accompanied by a humpback whale, through island archipelagos to our next remote beach campsite.

Day 4: Rest day and the “Art of doing nothing.” We rested, slept in, watched the birds and swell and played like kids.

Day 5: 28k back to Klemtu. The team was rejuvenated after the rest day and with a 4am dawn patrol wake up we knocked out 25k in 5 hrs to get back to Klemtu for lunch. From there it was another 3k back the ferry for departure south.

Still processing this one and so proud of this crew. Grateful to be able to guide you. Gratitude to the people of Klemtu and for the honor and opportunity to paddle the traditional lands, marine protected areas and in the Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy.

It was 16 years ago I paddled towards the big house in Klemtu on my Standup4Greatbear Expedition and it feels great to be back with a close group of friends and expedition paddlers.

We arrived in Klemtu after an 8hr BC Ferry ride from Port Hardy. After a delicious salmon and prawn dinner Lodge we warmed up a sunset paddle. Boards get loaded early tomorrow morning as we head deep into the lands of the Kitasoo Xais Xai and the Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy.
