At Lake Shirakawa, located at the foot of the Iide mountain range in Yamagata prefecture, trees are submerged up to their trunks in water only in spring when the water level rises due to melting snow, creating a fantastic scene of a submerged forest. 🌲

The contrast between the willow trees that have begun to sprout and the nearby Mt. Iide covered with lingering snow is results in otherworldly views that can only be glimpsed for a brief period, from March until May each year. 💙

Every year on the third weekend of May, Japan’s northern metropole of Sendai comes alive with colourfully dressed dancers and samurai, as part of a festival known as Aoba Matsuri! 🎊
With origins dating back to 1655, Aoba Matsuri is a celebration of Sendai’s verdant foliage, as well its samurai lord founder, Date Masamune. 🌱

Saturday is regarded as the eve of the main festival, where dozens of community dance troupes overtake the central promenade of Aoba Dori, whereas Sunday features processions of samurai and floats, not to mention the portable shrine of Aoba-jinja – where Masamune himself is enshrined!

The towering Onogame in the northern part of Niigata prefecture's Sado Island is a massive monolith, featured with two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.⛰️

At the foot of this grand single rock, the Tobishima-Kanzou (a rare type of daylily) turn the landscape a brilliant golden color in early summer. Around 500,000 blossoms sway in the sea breeze, and the contrast of the blue ocean and sky with the green grasslands creates a breathtaking scene—truly one of Sado’s miraculous natural wonders. 🏵️🌊

From late May to early June, when the flowers reach their peak, the Sado Kanzou Week festival is held, celebrating the season alongside traditional performing arts.

This early-summer paradise of flowers continues to enchant all who visit. 💛
