CONG BIBLE STUDY: ABRAHAM MEETS MELCHIZEDEK

Following his victory over a coalition of kings, Abraham met Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of the Most High God.

Genesis 14:17-18 notes that after defeating Chedorlaomer, the 2 men met at the Low Plain of Shaveh. This would be near ancient Salem (early Jerusalem), adjacent to the area of the later royal and Levitical sites.

Melchizedek, serving as both king of Salem and priest of Jehovah (God Most High), brought out bread and wine to bless Abraham. In return, Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.

This encounter as a foreshadowing or type of the everlasting kingship and priesthood of Jesus Christ under God’s arrangement

Noah’s son, Shem, from the pre-flood era, was alive during the time of Abraham and is suggested to have been Melchizedek.

CONG. BIBLE STUDY: ABRAHAM IN DAN

In Genesis 14, Abraham rescues his nephew Lot from invading kings, pursuing them to Dan before rejecting spoils from the King of S***m to demonstrate his reliance on Jehovah. This event highlights his loyalty, faith, and adherence to righteous principles.

Dan is city in the extreme north of Israel. Prior to its capture by the tribe of Dan, it was called Leshem or Laish by the pagan inhabitants. The Danites rebuilt the destroyed city and called it “Dan by the name of their father, Dan.” However, the city is mentioned some four centuries earlier by the name of Dan in the account of Abraham’s pursuit of Chedorlaomer and his allies all the way “up to Dan.” There is nothing to argue against the existence of this name, Dan, as applying to the indicated area in the time of Abraham. The correspondence of this early name to that of the forefather of the tribe of Dan may have been coincidental or even divinely directed.

The name Dan again appears in the Pentateuch at Deuteronomy 34:1, where it is included among the extremities of the territory seen by Moses in his final view of the Promised Land from his position on Mount Nebo.

Since Dan is located not far from Mount Hermon, this may mean that Moses’ view reached up to that range. The use of the name Dan here could correspond to its usage in the case of Abraham or could be the result of Joshua’s recording the final portion of the book, which includes events following Moses’ death.

WATCHTOWER STUDY: DEAD SEA SCROLLS
- Paragraph 15

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in caves near Qumran by the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. Their countless ancient manuscripts dating from the third century B.C.E. to the first century C.E. Among these, the Great Isaiah Scroll is one of the most famous and complete, containing all 66 chapters of the biblical book. These ancient texts validate the exceptional accuracy of Bible transmission over a millennium and frequently preserve the divine name, the Tetragrammaton (YHWH), written in distinct paleo-Hebrew or square script.

Many of these prized manuscripts are safeguarded in Jerusalem at the Shrine of the Book, a specialized wing of the Israel Museum designed with a distinctive white dome symbolizing the lids of the ancient storage jars. The Qumran discoveries hold profound significance because they demonstrate that despite centuries of hand-copying, the essential message of the Hebrew Scriptures remained unaltered, while visibly confirming the historical usage and prominent presence of the personal divine name in early Jewish writings.

WATCHTOWER STUDY: CAPERNAUM
- Paragraph 1 (John 6:59)

“He said these things as he was teaching in a synagogue in Ca·perʹna·um”.

Capernaum was a prominent city on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee that served as the primary base for Jesus Christ’s Galilean ministry. It was a bustling commercial and fishing hub with a Roman customs post and military presence, though it is unmentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Capernaums meaning derives from the Hebrew Kafar Nahum, meaning “village of Nahum”.

Positioned on active trade routes, making it a center for fishing, agriculture, and tax collection (where Matthew worked and a Roman centurion was stationed).

Jesus moved his center of activity there from Nazareth, making it widely referred to in the Gospels as his “home city”.

Jesus taught in the local synagogue, astounding listeners with his authority, and performed numerous miracles nearby, such as curing a demonized man, healing Peter’s mother-in-law, and healing a paralytic lowered through a roof.

Jesus cured the son of a royal court official located in Capernaum while remaining miles away in Cana. He also raised from the dead Jairus daughter. Jairus was the presiding officer of the synagogue in Capernaum.

Despite being favored with Jesus’ presence and powerful works, Capernaum largely failed to repent. Jesus prophesied its downfall, and today the site at Tell Hum lies completely in ruins.

CONGREGATION BIBLE STUDY: ABRAHAM AND SARAH VISIT EGYPT

Memphis was likely the ruling political capital of Egypt when Abraham traveled there due to a famine in Canaan and interacted with the Pharaoh.

The Capital: Biblical scholars and reference works note that Memphis (referred to as Noph in the Hebrew scriptures) served as a primary administrative, commercial, and royal hub during early Egyptian history.

Abraham’s Visit: Recorded in Genesis chapter 12, Abraham traveled into Egypt with Sarah because of severe food shortages.

The Pharaoh’s Court: According to traditional chronology and biblical geography, the royal court where Sarah was brought and where the Pharaoh was subsequently checked by divine plague is reasonably deduced to have been located at Memphis.

Prophetic Fulfillment and decline of Memphis: Later Hebrew prophets, including Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, pronounced judgments against Egypt and its prominent cities.

Ruins Today: Biblical commentary highlights that prophecies indicating Memphis would become “an object of astonishment” without inhabitant aligned with history, as its stones were later heavily quarried, leaving mostly cemeteries and monumental statues behind.

WEEKLY BIBLE READING: ASHKELON

Ashkelon was an ancient Mediterranean seaport and one of the five primary Philistine cities, located about 19 km north of Gaza. It sat in a rocky amphitheater facing the sea in a fertile region.

Situated on the southern Mediterranean coast of the coastal plain. Built in a natural rocky amphitheater facing the sea.

Known for fertile land producing figs, apples, and scallions (named after the city).

Assigned to the tribe of Judah, who captured it briefly (Judges 1:18).

Remained a major Philistine stronghold where Samson struck down 30 men (Judges 14:19).

Mentioned in prophecies by Amos (Amos 1:8) and Jeremiah regarding its downfall and defeat (Jeremiah 25:20, 47:5-7).

Mentioned by David in his song of mourning for Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1:20).
