By now, we all know that women over 50 represent one of the most valuable and fastest-growing segments in travel. In North America alone, the women 50+ travel market is estimated to spend more than an estimated USD$245 billion annually. In Canada, 54% of all travellers are women, and more than half of them are over 55, representing a CAD$43/ USD$31 billion market in Canada alone. Similarly, when it comes to solo travel, JourneyWoman's “Invisible No More” research shows that 61% of women 50+ prefer solo travel, up from 50% in 2020.

This growth signals real opportunity for travel advisors that take the time to understand the needs of this audience and take an active role shifting outdated stereotypes. Read on for three myths and Carolyn's advice on building relationships with women over 50 travellers.

Solo wheelchair travel? Cruising might be the easiest way in.

On September 11, the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, took in 7,000 strangers who had nowhere else to go, and by the end of the week, they weren't strangers anymore. 🇨🇦

When US airspace shut down, 38 planes were diverted to this small airport in Central Newfoundland.

A town of just 12,000 people opened their homes, kitchens and hearts to everyone who landed. That story became the inspiration for the hit musical Come From Away.

Today, Gander's restored airport lounge, once opened by Queen Elizabeth II and visited over the decades by everyone from Fidel Castro to Frank Sinatra, displays photos and memorabilia from that unforgettable week, free for visitors to explore.
