We are seeing more of the same movies over and over again: more sequels, remakes, adaptations, and reboots. It's understandable, these stories have a following and demonstrated their success. Studios are willing to spend millions on branded stories because they believe they come with a loyal audience and automatic success.
But sometimes, even a branded story can flop. Take a look at Mortal Engines and its catastrophic flop in the box office. This was a branded story with a following and yet it still failed. It seems that sophisticated visual effects and familiar stories are being used as the main selling point rather than narrative itself.
You can wow an audience to come see your visually-stunning movie, but it won't resonate in their soul like it would with an effective original story like Fight Club, A Beautiful Mind, The Prestige, Looper, Get Out, Matrix and more.
They are hoping to make the BIG BUCKS on BIG BUCKS. Thinking spending more on a branded story will excel them into profit. With this thinking they are are closing off an entire branch of films that could've been the next Donnie Darko - original stories that compelled audiences, not re-brands.
I'll take you back to the early 70's, when the industry was not doing so well - until it took a risk on a bunch of young, eccentric filmmakers with odd ideas that eventually led to a wave of the most iconic films and franchises ever created; Star Wars, Godfather, Jaws, Rocky etc. A self-sustained story that is compelling, emotional, engaging, and cinematic is what makes the film successful, not a recycled narrative.
I think we need more original ideas in the market. People have seen it all, and now, more than ever, we are welcoming out-of-the-box ideas. There are filmmakers, like myself, who have non-traditional stories in their heads and want to share their vision with the world. My ideas are out of the ordinary but are still human-like, relatable, witty, soulful and entertaining.
I appreciate mastery in films by auteurs such as Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and aspire to their standards of filmmaking. With the right tools, resources, and studio or individual backing, I know I can affect people through my stories.
