Let's fix the confusion between the 2 European Border systems, EES vs. ETIAS.
EES = Entry/Exit System. A digital border-management system covering 29 participating European countries. It records eligible non-EU travellers’ passport details, entry and exit information, and biometric data. Registration takes place at the border, with no application fee.
ETIAS = European Travel Information and Authorization System. A forthcoming pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, including Canadians, visiting 30 participating European countries. Once introduced, travellers will apply online before departure. The planned ETIAS fee is €20 (with exemptions for applicants under 18 or over 70). Approval will be linked to the traveller’s passport and remain valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It will not guarantee admission at the border or extend permitted stays.
The practical takeaway: allow time for EES border processing today, and monitor official announcements for ETIAS. No ETIAS application is required at the moment.
