Essaouira, Morocco one of our favorite stops. An ancient fortified city formly known as Mogador. Vibrant colour's, the crashing Atlantic and a beautifully relaxed vibe. And they love cats to the point of building monuments for them.

Hidden among the rice fields of Ninh Binh, .resort
is a peaceful retreat that perfectly captures the spirit of northern Vietnam. Traditional Vietnamese architecture, lush gardens, mountain views and warm local hospitality create a stay that's as authentic as it is luxurious. It's the perfect base from which to explore Tam Coc's waterways, limestone karsts and surrounding countryside at a slower pace.

We had heard so much about Ninh Binh and were not disappointed. The key, though, is staying in the right place, as it's a popular destination just two hours from Hanoi.

The mountains and waterways were incredible. By getting up early, we avoided the crowds and shared the quiet dirt roads and canals with little more than the ducks as we cycled and drifted through this remarkable landscape.

If someone showed you photographs of Ninh Binh and told you they were from a fantasy film set, you would probably believe them. Towering limestone karsts rise dramatically from rivers, wetlands and emerald-green rice fields, creating some of the most extraordinary scenery we encountered anywhere in Southeast Asia.

We climbed steep staircases to breathtaking viewpoints, drifted through caves by rowboat and spent much of our time simply taking in the landscape. Often called "Halong Bay on land", Ninh Binh deserves recognition all on its own.

Some places stay with you long after you've left, and Avana Retreat in Mai Chau is one of them.
Hidden among misty mountains, waterfalls and emerald rice terraces, this intimate 36-villa retreat blends luxury with a deep respect for nature and local culture.
It's the kind of place that reminds you to slow down, breathe deeply and truly take in your surroundings.

Mai Chau feels a world away from Vietnam's bustling cities. We spent our days hiking through emerald rice paddies, wandering into White Thai villages and being cheerfully followed by schoolchildren and their dogs.
At sunrise, mist drifted across the mountains, while evenings ended in a peaceful retreat with cascading waterfalls, koi-filled ponds and views stretching into the valley. If you want to experience Vietnam's quieter, more authentic side, this is where you'll find it.

Just minutes from the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai is one of Vietnam's most celebrated luxury retreats. Set on the pristine sands of Ha My Beach, this all-villa resort pairs exceptional privacy with authentic Vietnamese hospitality.
It's also perfectly positioned to explore three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary and the Imperial City of Huế, before returning to one of the country's finest beachfront escapes.

Our next stop took us to the charming riverside town of Hoi An, where Vietnam slows to a gentler pace. We cycled through quiet farming villages before spending the day with a local family, picking fresh morning glory, rolling perfectly crispy spring rolls and discovering that Vietnamese chilli sauce is not for the faint-hearted!

As evening fell, the lantern-lit streets and colourful boats along the Thu Bồn River created one of the most magical atmospheres of our entire journey. And yes, the nearby beaches are every bit as beautiful as you've heard.

After the wonderful chaos of Ho Chi Minh City, Hotel des Arts felt like the perfect retreat. Inspired by French Indochina, the hotel combines old-world elegance with contemporary Vietnamese flair.
The rooftop pool offers sweeping views across the city, while the rooftop bar is the ideal spot to watch the lights come alive after dark.
What we loved most was its sense of place, it feels unmistakably connected to the city around it rather than being a generic luxury hotel.

Stylish, comfortable and brilliantly located.
