The Grade 9s concluded the school year and their study of Macbeth with a springtime visit to the Stratford Festival! Directed by Robert Lepage, famous for his use of technology and cinematic elements in stage productions, his adaptation of the Bard's play set in Quebec during the 1990s did not disappoint. Instead of Scottish thanes, Lepage had biker gangs and motorcycles on the stage.

SCS students also participated in an acting workshop in Powell Hall led by Stratford actor Julie Tepperman. Finally, the students enjoyed a medieval feast to celebrate Macbeth's coronation. The Grade 9s, dressed in costumes, gave toasts and played some games to test their knowledge of the play.

At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, our youngest Clementines in Grades 1 and 2 put together time capsules, which were then safely stowed in Principal Perry’s office. Before saying farewell for the summer, those same students spent some time with Ms Perry, opening up their time capsules and marvelling over how much they had all learned and grown over the course of the year!

It’s an SCS tradition: prior to the annual Farewell Assembly, where the grad class says goodbye to SCS, they each receive a bear courtesy of the SCS Alum Association. The Grade 5s lent a hand by making sure each bear was in uniform! (Number 1 Dress, for the occasion). 😉

One of the Grade 4 class’ recent Science units centred around “Habitats and Communities”. The students learned about endangered species, and then created e-books containing information about their chosen species and respective habitat. Before the end of the school year, Grade 4 shared their e-books with students in Grades 1 and 2!

The Indigenous Affairs Circle ran an informative and engaging assembly in recognition of Indigenous History Month earlier this month.

Indigenous History Month celebrates the unique cultures, traditions, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

For this assembly, all students and staff sat in a circular seating formation as circles hold cultural importance for Indigenous peoples, representing connection and the cyclical nature of life.

Guest speaker Caleb Turner, Moose Cree First Nation Language and Culture Program Coordinator, joined the full school virtually to share his experiences and teach us about the significance of the Medicine Wheel as related to languages, cultures, and the arts in Indigenous communities.

We are very grateful for our continued partnership with Moose Cree First Nation and for the teachings shared by Caleb and the Indigenous Affairs Circle.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate, recognize, and honour the heritage, cultures, and valuable contributions made by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis across Canada. For generations, many Indigenous communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or around June 21, due to the significance of the summer solstice. Indigenous Peoples Day serves as a reminder to Canadians to take time to recognize and celebrate the unique cultures of First Nations people, Inuit, and Métis. As a school, SCS is committed to seeking truth and acknowledging the impacts of colonialism today and every day.

Over the past month, Clementines have been busy preparing for a summer harvest! 🌱

Led by Ms Chisholm and with support from Mr. D and staff, students in the Garden Club built the planter boxes by hand, now proudly placed in our side yard. Once the boxes were complete, students in the Grade 3 class got to work planting flowers and herbs in the SCS garden.

We’re happy to report that the plants are thriving and are being well cared for over the summer as they soak up the sun!

Last week, several SCS students paddled their way towards meeting one of the requirements for their Bronze, Silver, or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award! Students in Grades 9, 10, and 11, alongside three SCS staff members, spent four days canoeing and portaging in the Haliburton Highlands. Steering their canoes over the glassy water, portaging across challenging terrain, cooking over a campfire, and sleeping under the stars (in a tent 😉) all contributed to skill development in areas such as teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, and perseverance.
