The closer I get to Japan, the more my research is shifting from the exciting big-picture ideas to the small practical details.
How am I getting from the airport?
How will I stay connected?
What payment methods do I need?
What do I need to complete before I arrive?
How am I getting around once I’m there?
And how much luggage do I really want to move from place to place?
None of this is particularly glamorous, but these are the pieces that can make such a difference once you actually arrive.
Because Japan is new for me, I’m taking my time with this part: researching, verifying and figuring out what I want to have settled before I leave.
I’ll keep sharing what I’m learning as the trip gets closer.

If you’ve never cruised before, it can be easy to imagine cruising as one very specific kind of vacation.

But the experience can vary dramatically depending on the ship, itinerary, pace and what your family actually wants from the trip.

Some families want plenty happening onboard.

Others care much more about the destinations.

Some want lots of time together, while others need enough variety for everyone to do their own thing too.

That’s why I wouldn’t start by asking, “Am I a cruise person?”

I’d start with:

What kind of vacation are we actually looking for?

Family gatherings have a funny way of turning into future-trip conversations.

Someone says, “We should all take a cruise,” and suddenly six people are picturing six different vacations.

Before anyone starts comparing ships, start with the family: who is going, what does everyone want from the trip, how much time do you want together, and where do people need flexibility?

Those conversations make the research much easier later. Save this for the next family travel discussion.

I haven’t talked much about this yet, but Japan is officially on my calendar.

I’ll be heading to Yokohama at the end of November for an industry conference, with a little time beforehand to experience Japan as a first-time visitor.

Right now I’m in the part I know well: researching, asking questions, sorting through logistics and figuring out what I actually need to know before I arrive.

I’ll be sharing some of that process here, along with what I learn once I’m there. If there is something about travelling to Japan you would be curious to see through a first-time visitor’s eyes, tell me.

When families start researching their first cruise, it is easy to jump straight into ships, cruise lines and itineraries.

I would start somewhere else: with the people taking the trip.

The right cruise depends on how your family wants the vacation to feel, who is travelling, and what matters most once everyone is together.

There is usually one person in the family who knows where everyone needs to be, what time they need to leave, where the confirmation number is, and what the backup plan is if something changes.

And that person is often still doing all of that while everyone else is enjoying the trip.

Family travel planning is about more than choosing a destination or comparing resorts.

It is also about thinking through the details before you leave, anticipating where the stress points might be, and creating a plan that works for the people actually travelling.

Especially the person everyone usually relies on.

Because you should not have to spend the whole vacation managing everyone else’s vacation.

You should get to be part of it too.

Two travellers can be the same age, love the same activity, and head to the same country... and still want completely different vacations.
That’s why I don’t think good travel planning starts with what someone should want.
It starts with listening.
For these two snowboarders, the livelier resort may have looked like the obvious choice on paper. But what they described to me was something very different: quiet surroundings, full days on the slopes and somewhere comfortable to relax afterwards.
Once I understood that, the right fit became much clearer.
That’s one of the things I love about planning travel. Age, budget and destination give me information. The conversation tells me about the people taking the trip.
Now I’m curious: which sounds more like you?
