We're excited to welcome Jody Orsborn to the MakeLab leadership team as our new Director of Innovation and Strategy. Jody is a creative rock star who brings with her 15+ years of experience working with some of the most innovative and groundbreaking clients on multiple continents including Google, Universal Music and Red Bull.

From producing 1000+ person experiential events where she converted carwashes into nightclubs to founding (and growing through to acquisition) creative “fixer” business, The Backscratchers, she brings an unparalleled combination of expertise across events, creativity, technology and innovation to our industry. We can’t wait to see what we create together. Welcome to the team, Jody!

Sophisticated, with just the right amount of silly, ’s partners were invited to a virtual happy hour at show, where they were guided through designing custom gingerbread houses using . Our team then went to work, 3D printing the cookie cutters required to make each house a reality, sending bespoke kits to guests’ homes across the continent. Each kit came with custom 3D pritned cookie cutters, gingerbread mix courtesy of , and candy and gumdrops.

Last month, we turned our studio into a film set! We had the amazing opportunity to work with Microsoft to run a Virtual Generative Design Workshop. We led 400 attendees in 10 min sessions, showing them the capabilities of generative design and having attendees collaborate on a design canvas. Attendees drew in parameters and we fed their designs into a generative design software, generating over hundreds of different iterations! By the end of each workshop, each attendee received a custom laser cut generative design piece their session made. Don't want to brag but this was definitely the worlds quickest generative design workshop!

Throwback to one of our first events. We worked with the Royal Ontario Museum to build a 3D Printed Mesopotamian City exhibit. Guests designed ancient city blocks, printed them out, and added them to a massive collaborative 3D city. At the end of the exhibit, we had generated a spectacular menagerie-cityscape with hundreds of unique elements — each piece designed by a different person. Still one of our favourites.

Nothing like having seven, $10,000 digital embroidery machines, and using them to embroider dog selfies. Actually though: we're setting up pet photo booths across the country, letting people embroider onto all sorts of things. Canines and Cashmere, anyone? We're also working with e-commerce partners to integrate the experience for online shoppers.

Santa's only a call away.🎅We're working with retailers to create virtual Santa experiences for kids (and adults!) that can't get to a mall this holiday season. Suffice to say, our studio looks festive, with our North Pole film studio. Oh, and we're hiring Santas; apply within.

It's a hard year to make the holidays special, and we've found one way. Our team's turned our lab into factory for custom wrapping paper. We've partnered with brands from around the world, letting online shoppers design their own custom sheets to wrap their purchases with. Shoppers upload their selfie online, and recieve their custom roll in a week.
