🇨🇦 Canada is 158 years old now!

But did you know Toronto is 33 years older? 🤯

In 1793, the British Crown acquired it through the “Toronto Purchase” agreement with the Mississauga First Nation 🧡🪶 in 1787. The agreed-upon payment for the land was approximately £1,700, along with goods such as bales of cloth, axes, and other trading items 🧺🪓.

It was originally named York in 1793, but in 1834, the town of York became the city of Toronto 🏙️. The reason for the name change was because York was too similar to New York 🗽 and NYC was already established at this time.

Toronto is a word that originates from the Mohawk word “Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing” 🌊🌲.(or "plenty" depending on which indigenous people you ask)

🇨🇦 Canada officially became a country on July 1, 1867, when the Constitution Act united Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into the Dominion of Canada. This established Canada as its own nation within the British Empire 👑.

While the country became more and more independent over time, July 1, 1867, is recognized as Canada’s birthday 🎂🍁.
