The TTC has installed its first new subway safety barrier at TMU Station — and it’s already sparking controversy.

The waist-high steel barriers are part of a pilot project expected to cost around $2 million per station. The TTC says the barriers, combined with AI-powered track intrusion technology, are designed to improve safety and reduce incidents.

But critics say the barriers don’t go far enough, arguing that full-height platform doors would provide much better protection. Those, however, could cost around $50 million per station and require much more extensive construction.

The barriers at TMU Station are expected to be fully installed by the end of September.

$2 million for a barrier — worth it, or should Toronto have gone all the way with platform doors? 👀

TTC riders, your fares are changing today

Starting September 1, the TTC is introducing monthly fare capping. Instead of buying a monthly pass upfront, you’ll pay as you go — and after 47 paid trips in a calendar month, the rest of your TTC rides are FREE. 👀

The catch? You need to use the same payment method and same card or device every time. Transfers within the two-hour window don’t count toward the 47-trip cap.

The TTC says the program will give frequent riders the benefits of a monthly pass without having to pay upfront.

Lake Ontario has a new name on Google Maps — but only if you’re in the U.S.

Google has updated its Maps naming following the U.S. government’s decision to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

Here’s the interesting part: Canadians will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” while people using Google Maps in the U.S. will see “Lake America.” Users outside Canada and the U.S. will see both names.

So depending on which side of the border you’re on, you could literally be looking at the same lake with a different name. 👀
