Everyone keeps asking me why I went to Finland with my kids and what my honest experience was as a Black family.

Spoiler, it was a good one and I will go back!

Same experience carried over in Estonia too, from Helsinki all the way to Tallinn.

How to do the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn with kids 🇫🇮⛴️🇪🇪
We took

📍 Terminal
We left from West Terminal 2, run by . It looks like an airport, big and easy to move through. Check in closes 30 minutes before departure. The port gets busy, especially in summer, so give yourself time

⛴️ The crossing
About 2 hours. Ferries run often, several times a day. Book in advance online, that's what we did.

👶 Kids
Under 5 travel free. We paid 40€ round trip for me and my 8 year old.

🛏️ Private cabins
There are also private cabins you can rent for the crossing if you want to rest. We didn't book one since the ride is only two hours, but it's there if you want the option.

🧳 On board
• Play area for kids
• Music area and arcade
• Small shops, like duty free
• Tons of food options, including a buffet
• Lockers to store your bags

🧥 What to bring
Bring your passport, you need it. We went in July and it was actually cold, around 15 degrees, and raining. Bring sweaters even in summer.

Tallink Silja Line and Viking Line also run the same route.

I didn't know what to expect when we went to Helsinki. I just knew Finland 🇫🇮 was named the happiest country in the world.

Everything there was made easier for parents:

▪︎ had two playgrounds inside it
▪︎ let us ride free public transit with a stroller
▪︎ had this huge play area for the kids
▪︎ Public washrooms had tiny toilets for kids, my daughter missed those when we got home
▪︎Even some estaurants had playgrounds outside so the kids could go play
▪︎ libraryi has a coffee shop inside the library with a huge kids area
▪︎ has a free museum made just for kids, dress-up and all
▪︎ , you weren't kidding❤️.

Doing Helsinki with kids and short on time? The Stromma Hop On-Hop Off bus made it easier : .

A few tips if you're planning to do it:

• Buy your ticket online ahead of time for 10% off, you get a mobile ticket, no printing needed. You can also buy at the stop or straight from the driver, but drivers only take card
• Starts at Senate Square, but you can hop on at any of the 19 stops
• Tickets are valid 24 or 48 hours, so no rush to see everything in one trip
• Buses come every 30-40 minutes, 10am to 4pm
• Sit up top if the weather's good, roof closes if it rains

Some of the stops along the way with kids in mind:
• Senate Square and the Cathedral
• Oodi Library, right by a playground
• Sibelius Park, ice cream and another playground nearby
• Löyly, right on the water
• The Rock Church, carved into stone

Such an easy way to see a lot of the city without wearing everyone out.
