Have you ever been watching a movie or something on TV and thought, "that is really cool—I would like to see that in person"?
Thinking about perhaps creating that surreal, matrix-glitch feeling when your feet are suddenly standing exactly where your eyes have been staring for years?
To me, that is one of the biggest motivators for travel.
Discovering those far-away places you can only imagine, getting out there, and finally seeing them for yourself.
For me, it's the towns and cities-and the people within them-that pull me from the screen to the actual place.
If you have ever watched the show "Welcome to Wrexham," where two Hollywood actors purchased a fifth-level football club in Wales and documented the team's incredible rise through the ranks, you know the show is about much more than football. It also tells the story of the town of Wrexham and the people who live there.
Storytelling at its finest.
I was hooked.
Next step? Seeing it for myself.
I hired a great local guide—a true Wrexhamite-by the name of Bryan Still (highly recommend Bryan) to show me around the places I had already come to know from the little screen.
During my visit, meeting Rob Clarke from the local DVD shop was a highlight. Grabbing lunch at The Turf Butty Van-the food truck just outside the football stadium-and then taking it into The Turf, the pub featured prominently throughout the show, made for one of those moments where you just sit there smiling to yourself. Looking up and seeing Wayne Jones behind the bar, just like on TV, was simply cool.
But the best part?
Visiting Wrexham Stadium—The Racecourse.
I completely geeked out.
We were not allowed on the pitch, but just standing there felt surreal after watching four seasons of the show from the comfort of my living room back home in Canada.
It was absolutely worth the trip to Wales to experience Wrexham in person.
I could almost imagine what it would feel like to watch a match alongside 10,500 of my new Wrexham friends-people I somehow already felt connected to through the little screen.
Travel does that.
It creates memories.
Makes places real.
And allows you to become part of them.
That's what travel is.
The 5th season of Welcome to Wrexham is now on Disney+ Check out episode 4…..bring the tissues. Fantastic!
