💜 Harvesting & Replanting Lavender Seeds for Next Year! 💜

If you love your lavender’s fragrance and beauty, why not grow more from your own plants? 🌿 Here’s how to save and sow lavender seeds for next season:

1️⃣ Harvesting the seeds:
After the flowers have faded and the seed heads turn brown, snip off the dried flower spikes. Gently rub the heads over a clean surface to release the tiny black seeds.

2️⃣ Storing your seeds:
Keep seeds in a labeled paper envelope or small glass jar in a cool, dry spot until planting time. Avoid plastic bags — they can trap moisture and cause mold.

3️⃣ Planting for next year:
In early spring, start seeds indoors on the soil surface (they need light to germinate!). Keep them warm and moist until they sprout, then transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. 🌞

💫 With patience, you’ll have fresh lavender plants ready to fill your garden — and your home — with that calming scent once again!

💜 Have you tried growing lavender from seed before? Share your experiences below! 🌸

Let’s talk about ground covers.

Shady spot? No problem — here are some of the best groundcovers that thrive in shade, plus quick tips to pick the right one for your space 🌿

Top picks
• Ajuga (bugleweed) — fast-spreading, evergreen foliage with spring flower spikes; great for quick coverage and erosion control but can be aggressive in some sites.
• Vinca minor (periwinkle) — glossy evergreen leaves and spring flowers; excellent for slopes and deep shade but can become invasive in some regions.
• Pachysandra — tidy, shade-loving evergreen that forms a neat mat; good for plantings under trees and along foundations.
• Heuchera (coral bells) — not a carpet-former like the others, but excellent for dappled shade and adds color/texture with many foliage choices; use in drifts or mixed with ferns and hostas.

Quick selection tips
• Match plant to shade type — dappled, partial, or deep/full shade matter. Some do better in dry shade, others want consistently moist, well-drained soil.
• Watch invasiveness — fast spreaders (vinca, ajuga) are great for big problem areas but monitor edges so they don’t overrun beds.
• Deer & pets — check local advice: some groundcovers are deer-resistant, others are toxic to pets.
• Planting idea — mix 1–2 aggressive spreaders for fill (e.g., pachysandra or ajuga) with clumps of ornamental foliage like heuchera and ferns for year-round interest.

🌸 Overwintering Your Peonies: Tips for a Beautiful Spring Bloom! 🌸

As the temperatures drop, it’s time to tuck your peonies in for their long winter nap! 💤❄️

Here’s how to keep them happy through the cold months:
1️⃣ Cut back foliage – Once frost hits and leaves turn brown, trim stems to about 2–3 inches above the ground.
2️⃣ Clean up – Remove all old leaves and debris around the plant to prevent disease.
3️⃣ Mulch lightly – Add 2–3 inches of straw, shredded leaves, or compost around (not over) the crown for insulation.
4️⃣ Avoid overprotecting – Peonies like a cold winter rest, so don’t smother them!

Come spring, remove the mulch once the danger of frost has passed, and your peonies will reward you with those lush, gorgeous blooms we all love! 🌷💚

We were fortunate enough to stay in an amazing town called Annapolis Royal and meet a few folks who have moved from B.C. while there we went to the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens.
Enjoy a few photos of this 17 acre paradise.
