A beautiful Newfoundland Christmastime story!
Want to hear a secret asked Nanny Daisy? Miss Lucy looked up with wide eyes and said indeed I do Nanny Daisy. Let me explain to you how Nanny Nelda from Norman’s Cove was the head Nanny of Newfoundland and Labrador. Miss Lucy laughed and said I knew there was a boss nanny out there somewhere. You can’t tell anyone though! It’s a secret said Nanny Daisy ! Ok said Miss Lucy. There is a whole group of Nanny’s that are connected all across the province. They are very special Nanny’s that changed the lives of children everywhere in Newfoundland and Labrador. Parents were very busy back then so the gnomes selected one Nanny in each community who took care of all the children. These nanny’s kept children safe and entertained them in all the nooks and crannies. There was always a gnome called Aunt so and so that everyone knew and was drawn to. She always smiled and talked and played with all the children. She brought fresh baked cookies and chocolates everyday. She knew everyone by name and had a super human love for the young ones. All the neighborhood kids would flock to her garden or kitchen as we all learned from her. She would teach us the importance of sharing and helping others. She would always listen with her kind eyes. Nanny Nelda lived in the point on Smiths turn. She loved looking out over the ocean and the sunsets on Chapel Head were spectacular to watch. She was there when we fell off our bikes or watching to make sure we didn’t fall in the water. We never knew that she was the head Nanny of the province. She never let on at all. We never questioned how they all knew each other we all just knew they were protectors. The designation of “aunt” was a special badge given to the ladies who belonged to this elite group of incredible ladies. We don’t know if they ever got together to plan who was taking care of who but their influence blanketed the whole province
Nanny Daisy I think my Aunt Marion was part of this group. She sounds just like these ladies. She always gave us gifts, played hide and seek and listened to us and she is so much fun. She most definitely is Miss Lucy and when she gets older she will be promoted to Nanny status. Nanny’s don’t have the energy to play like Aunts do but they play a big part in the sisterhood in our province. They work together teach children important virtues and life lessons.
This sisterhood must have thousands of aunts and Nannies right asked Miss Lucy. Lucy stopped and fell silent. She realized something special. Now I understand why people love this province and I also know how my mom knew exactly what I wanted for Christmas last year as Aunt Marion was the only person I told. That’s right said Nanny Daisy. These Ladies connect the whole province with an unspoken magic known by the gnomes. Lucy smiled and sighed and fell asleep
