While Twillingate as it is known to exist today only came about in the 17th century due to European settlers, the area has been inhabited for far longer than that. Historical evidence has been found showing that indigenous people such as the Inuit and Beothuk had lived in and around the area for thousands of years. The oldest group of which being the Maritime Archaic, who's activity in the area has been dated back to 1500 BC. Artifacts including the remnants of ancient tools and weapons from this group have been uncovered in the area, showing that Twillingate Island had been inhabited far longer than what was originally thought.
