World Penguin Day isn't just to celebrate these remarkable birds.
It's also about raising awareness of the threats they face, and what we can do to help.
Many of the world's 18 penguin species are listed as Vulnerable or Endangered. In Antarctica, the Macaroni and Southern Rockhopper penguins are both listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (https://zurl.co/qBac2), with populations trending down, while Emperor penguins are now considered Endangered.
So what can you, as an Antarctic traveler, do?
Start by choosing a trip provider that's a member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO).
IAATO members follow strict operating guidelines to help people experience Antarctica without damaging it, from how Zodiacs approach and depart landing sites to where visitors walk once ashore. To protect wildlife, visitors maintain a safe distance and are given detailed instructions to avoid nesting areas, fragile terrain, and sensitive habitats.
As IAATO members ourselves, The Polar Adventure Company only partners with IAATO tour providers.
Viewing penguins in the wild is a great privilege, and it should never come at the expense of the place they call home.
