Hike the Rainforest Trail! This weekend we hiked the A loop, a while ago we did the B loop. Both are stunningly beautiful with massive trees. The photos never quite capture how big the trees really are.

There is a giant pacific octopus at the Ukee Aquarium. She was sleeping in her den the day we went but you can see some of her suckers here. This is our favourite rainy day activity in the area. Always a treat and the staff are very engaged and willing to share their knowledge of the sea creatures.

The textures of the beach are so compelling. Each surface tells an ever changing story. Sometimes I wish I could shrink down to the size of an 🐜 and experience the textures from their perspective.

Sunset is always a treat here and a great way to cap off the day. We usually take the two camp chairs provided at the Squid Shack across to Little Beach (5 minute walk) and watch from there with a 🍷 in our travel mugs.

The sea lions put on a show for us! The fisher people were cleaning their nets and the sea lions were looking for scraps. It is fun to take a sandwich down to the dock and watch what’s going on. Don’t let a seagull steal your sandwich!

The good folks at the Ucluelet Aquarium are probably out today catching specimens for its catch and release program. Each spring they catch plants and animals recording the location they were caught. Throughout the tourist season people come and enjoy the creatures. Then in the fall staff takes the plants and animals back to the place they were found and releases them back to the wild. It is Canada’s first catch-and-release aquarium and is a real gem.

Oceanfront?? Catherine and I have a difference of opinion. Between our cottage and the salty sea is a thin strip of forest which is common property to the strata. From our back deck you can see the ocean, albeit obstructed by the predominant forest view. Since we own the common property (with the other strata owners) and we can see the water from our cottage I call it oceanfront. My land locked upbringing in Alberta may be influencing my stance. Catherine’s position is that the view isn’t unobstructed and there is the common property between our lot and the water… who is right?
