We live on the surface of a planet that is hurtling through space at an amazing speed, all the while rotating on its axis once every 24 hours. With all that activity, it's amazing that some people have never looked toward the heavens and really seen Orion. Or Pegasus, Andromeda, Canis Major or Minor...

These streets were made for talking.

And that was over 500 years ago. Somehow, we still haven’t run out of things to say. Being one of the oldest cities in North America, St. John’s has plenty to see and do – from live music, to shopping, to dining. But getting lost in conversation? That never gets old.

Here, the weather is more than just small talk - it comes with its own vocabulary. Here are just a few of our favourite phrases:

🔷 Some Day on Clothes

A warm sunny day, usually with a gentle breeze. The perfect weather for hanging your laundry on the clothesline.

🔷 Mauzy

Grey and foggy, sometimes with light rain.

🔷 Flat Cam

A day so calm, the water's surface sits perfectly still like a reflective piece of glass.

🔷 RDF

Rain. Drizzle. Fog. Sometimes all at once.

🔷 Sheila's Brush

Otherwise known as the last winter storm of the year, usually after St. Patrick's Day.

It’s often said that if you don’t like the weather in Newfoundland and Labrador, you just need to wait fifteen minutes. With our sometimes-unpredictable conditions, you may find yourself experiencing all four seasons in a single day. It’s our favourite conversation starter, so it’s no surpri...

Home to 35 million seabirds. And a few wannabes.

Well, more than a few. The world’s largest population of humpback whales return each year, about 10,000 of them. Between May and September, you’ll see them feed, frolic, and even breach along our shores. What brings them back again and again? Maybe it’s something in the water – or something in the air.

When you’ve been around as long as St. John’s has, you know a thing or two about how to have a good time.

Breathe in briny sea air on a road trip around eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, taking in breaching whales and blustery gales, cape lighthouses and cod-kissing ceremonies.

All that time we lose track of must end up somewhere, right?

Somewhere along the way, the march of time broke into a sprint. But here in Red Bay, Labrador, you can stroll through the 16th century. That’s the thing about a place where time seems to stand still: it’s a lot easier to catch up.
