Day 5 – Hiking the Azores with G Adventures
Yesterday was our last full day in the Azores, and what a day it was! We started off at a beautiful lookout with incredible views over the island and the Atlantic, soaking in every moment of this stunning place.
Then we set off on our last hike of the trip. It was shorter but more technical, climbing over large lava boulders as we made our way up. The views and sense of adventure were worth every step!
After the hike, we enjoyed a fantastic included lunch with our group. The Alcatra (Azorean beef stew) was to die for, and the Dona Amélia cake with cappuccinos was exactly what we needed to refuel for the afternoon.
In the afternoon, we explored the Christmas Cave (Gruta do Natal), a lava tube cave where we put on helmets and descended into its dark, fascinating tunnels formed by ancient volcanic eruptions – it was like stepping into another world!
After a quick break at the resort, we joined our included walking tour of Angra do Heroísmo, learning about its UNESCO heritage, colorful streets, and gardens before our guide arranged a wonderful farewell dinner with tapas for us all to share.
To top it off, a few of us wandered into a small street party in a nearby neighborhood, dancing and meeting families from Terceira who welcomed us into their community hall with treats and drinks. They even invited us to come back on Sunday to experience their Crown tradition – such kindness and warmth we will never forget.
Next, we are off to Lisbon for some rest and relaxation. We are exhausted but so happy and grateful for this adventure!
