The origin of Cambodian (Khmer )Sbai is through of as being invented in the 1 st century during the Funan era and eight century of Chenla, kingdom of Cambodia.
The tale attached to it includes the founders of the Kingdom of Funan ,Preah Thong and Neang Neak “Naga woman “.According to the legend,Preah Thong holds on to a piece of the cloth worn on the Nagini during the journey to Naga of Kingdom. That is piece of cloth is known as Sbai.In the this tale ,Sbai symbolizes the Naga princess’ Tail.

Unique style of Red Dao traditional outfits through the lens of talented photographer Nguyen Son Tung.

Vietnam is home to 54 ethnic groups, each of which has its own identity and unique values in terms of customs and traditions, contributing to the cultural diversity in the country.

One of the groups is the Dao ethnic minority people who reside, for the most part, in the mountainous northern provinces of Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Ha Giang and Lang Son. The Red Dao are a subgroup of the Dao people, renowned for their colourful traditional costumes that leave an indelible impression on visitors.

Tuyen Quang is home to nearly 91,000 Dao people from nine different subgroups, with the Red Dao people living mostly in the districts of Na Hang and Lam Binh.

For the Red Dao, the way they dress symbolises their ethnicity and distinguishes them from others. They are easily identifiable by the predominance of red in their clothing as the colour is believed to bring luck, happiness, prosperity and positive energy to everybody.

The traditional Red Dao art of costume decoration in Tuyen Quang’s districts of Na Hang, Lam Binh, Chiem Hoa, Ham Yen and Son Duong was recognised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible heritage last year.

This traditional art has a long history. In the remote villages of the Red Dao people, women still make traditional clothing for themselves and other family members.

Red Dao costumes vary by regions. There are differences in the way Red Dao people in each region wear tunics, headscarves, belts and other accessories. In some places, Red Dao people wear a string of nine or 11 large red cotton balls around their neck.

They often dress in their most beautiful and colourful outfits during traditional festivals, for weddings or on the occasion of welcoming special guests to their home.

Pi Mai Lao or Lao New Year 2019 in Laos.

Pi Mai Lao or Lao New Year is the liveliest holiday of the year and one that everyone looks forward to, as it is a time when many people visit their families all over the country. It takes place around 13-15th April, the hottest part of the year, which is why no one really minds being constantly wet from the water being thrown everywhere.

The three days of Lao New Year (Pi Mai Lao)
The first day of celebration is the last day of the old year. Perfume, water and flowers are prepared for the Lao New Year. In temples all over the country, Buddha images are taken down from their permanent places and placed on special temporary easy-to-access places within the Wat (temple) compounds so villagers can pour perfumed water on them. They then collect the water that runs off the Buddha images and take it home to pour on family members, friends and relatives. This is believed to bless, clean and purify the receivers before entering the Lao New Year.

The second day of the Lao New Year festival is the "day of no day", a day that falls in neither the old year nor the new year. Houses and villages are properly cleaned on the second day. Traditionally elders will advise young people to avoid taking nap on the second day as it’s believed that in doing so one will get sick in the coming year. They encourage young people to clean their places and go out to pour water on other elders in the village and wish them well, and finally have fun and get wet themselves. This is a way to clean and send bad things away with the old year.

The last day of the festival marks the start of the new year. This day many families will hold a Baci ceremony at their houses to welcome Lao New Year as well as to wish their elders good health and long life. Some might respectfully ask for forgiveness from their elders for things that they did in the past year that might have hurt their feelings unintentionally. And at the same time they give the elders gifts.

In late afternoon or evening of the last day, in the temples, the Buddha images are moved back to their permanent homes. On that same evening devotees go to the temples to listen to the monks chanting as an act to ask for forgiveness from the monks as well as from the Buddha images for what they did (pouring water on them) in this past few days that might have accidentally touched them (monks and Buddha are not to be touched). After that, a Vien Tien, a candlelight procession, takes place around the temples and that is the end of the Lao New Year celebration.

Pi Mai traditions
Water is for washing homes, Buddha images, monks, and soaking friends and passers-by. Students first respectfully pour water on their elders, then monks for blessings of long life and peace, and last of all they throw water on each other. The water is perfumed with flowers or natural perfumes. Some people prefer flowers in the water to give a pleasant smell, as well as adding cologne/perfume. The idea of watering came from the legend of King Kabinlaphom, whose seven daughters kept his severed head in a cave. The daughters would visit their father's head every year during mid April (the time of Lao New Year) and perform a ritual to bring happiness and good weather.

During the three days Lao New Year, snd is brought to the temple grounds and is made into stupas or mounds, then decorated before being given to the monks as a way of making merit. There are two ways to make the sand stupas. One way is to go to the river bed and build them using river sand, and the other way is to bring sand to the temples. Sand stupas are decorated with flags, flowers, white lines, and splashed with perfumed water. Sand stupas symbolise the mountain, Phoukao Kailat, where King Kabinlaphom's head was kept by his seven daughters.

Another way to make merit at this time is to set animals free. The Lao believe that even animals need to be free. The most commonly freed animals are tortoises, fish, crabs, birds, eels, and other small animals.

Flowers are gathered to decorate images of the Buddha. In the afternoons people collect fresh flowers. Senior monks take the younger monks to a garden filled with flowers, where they pick flowers and bring back to the wat to wash. People who didn't participate in the flower picking bring baskets to wash the flowers so the flowers can shine with the Buddha statues.

Pi Mai Lao in Luang Prabang
Pi Mai Lao is particularly spectacular in Luang Prabang as this is where there are many parades and other festivities, which normally last about a week.

The religious highlight is when the revered Prabang Buddha image is carried through the streets in a golden house supported by two long poles, carried by young men. Leading the parade are two red-faced mythical characters called Pou Gneu and Gna Gneu (Grandpa and Grandma Gneu). At parade’s end, the statue is placed at a temple called Wat May where it rests for the three-day festival. Throughout this time people pour water scented with flowers over it.

There is an annual beauty pageant in Luang Prabang called the Nang Sangkhane pageant. There are seven contestants, each one symbolising one of King Kabinlaphom's seven daughters and they ride down the street, sometimes on elephants.

In the evenings, there will be processions of Nagas, lanterns and many traditional performances.

Don’t forget to wish everyone a happy Lao New Year, Souksan Van Pi Mai or Sabaidee Pi Mai, and smile while you get wet.

🏡🏡🔥💥 BANYAN TREE LANG CO RESORT- HUE.

🏁 LOCATION
Half way between Hoi An and Hue, Lang Co is like wading into a surreal picture of everything you imagine rural Vietnam to be – farmers with conical hats, serene rice paddies, flocks of ducks and grazing buffalo. The resort itself sits beneath the steep hills of Truong Son Mountain Range on a three-kilometre stretch of sandy beachfront at Lang Co Bay, a holiday spot historically favoured by Vietnamese royalty, in Central Vietnam.

🎯 THE SPACE
Designed like a Vietnamese village with villas dotted along the beach or facing the hillside, all of the resort's 62 beach, lagoon and hillside villas have their own private pool. The hillside villas offer incredible views over Canh Duong beach; beach villas are steps from the sand. The design integrates clay-tiled pitched roofs and open courtyards inspired by the traditional garden houses of neighbouring Hue. There's also a lagoon pool, yoga pavilion, water sports centre, while the integrated resort offers a Nick Faldo-designed golf course, two spas and five restaurants. The Banyan Tree and sister property, the Angsana Lang Co, are connected by an artificial canal decorated with colourful lanterns, with a barge ferrying guests between the two resorts.

💒 THE ROOM
My lagoon villa (131 square metres) feels spacious and sumptuous decked out in silk and marble with my own pool overlooking the lagoon. Although I have neighbours, it's private with high walls and lush foliage allowing for midnight skinny dips. The king-size bed is dressed in 1000-thread-count cotton and there's a huge artwork of lotus flowers. Outside a timber sun deck with two sun loungers by the pool is shaded by an enormous umbrella, while a gorgeous, tropical garden is lit by lantern light. Best of all are the complimentary bikes that guests can use to transport themselves around the sprawling resort.

🍲 THE FOOD
There's a choice of three outlets – the Water Court for international and Vietnamese cuisine (try the Papaya salad), the signature hilltop Thai restaurant Saffron with modern Thai and opulent oriental decor, and the breezy beachfront Italian eatery Azura which has an open pizza counter. More dining options are available at neighbouring Angsana. I particularly loved the extravagant breakfast spread where staff can whip you a steaming bowl of noodle soup to order. There are also cute mason jars of yoghurt, Bircher muesli, fresh fruit, and decent coffee. The deep-fried banana fritters with salted-honey ice cream at Saffron is wickedly good.

🗾 STEPPING OUT
Not far from the resort, three UNESCO World Heritage sites can be found including the ancient trading town of Hoi An, the vast complex of Hue Monuments and My Son Champa ruins, an imperial city dating to the fourth century. The world's largest known cave passage, Hang Son D**g, is also nearby. If visiting Hoi An or Da Nang during daylight hours, be sure your driver takes you via the Hai Van (sea cloud) Pass between Lang Co and Da Nang. The winding route climbs to an elevation of 496 metres and was historically the boundary between Vietnam and the kingdom of Champa. The old highway affords staggering views – the hills tumble down to sweeps of beach on one side, and the town of Da Nang on the other. Little stalls along the way sell fresh coconuts to passers-by.

➡ THE VERDICT
This gorgeous resort may feel remote and secluded but offers easy access to explore the best of Central Vietnam. The service is attentive, there's daily yoga in a gorgeous pavilion surrounded by lush vegetation, free bikes to get around, great food and a beautiful beach. I'd return in a heart beat.

Things To Do In Hoi An, Vietnam - Don't missed these activities when you are visiting Hoi An!!!

Hoi An has a reputation for being one of the prettiest cities in all of Vietnam and the Old Town here has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its 800 historic buildings. There is a definite ‘old town’ feeling here which is like stepping back into the Vietnam of ancient times, and the city is also famous as it was never bombed during the Vietnam War.

Hoi An is also located on the Thu Bon River which is flanked by bars, cafes and local markets and you can walk along the banks at night and take in the views across the rippling water. When you walk around the city, you can take in spots such as museums, ancient homes and pretty temples, and Hoi An also has a delicious local food scene. As if that wasn’t enough, the surrounding countryside of Hoi An is equally scenic and you can easily take a day trip out to glorious beaches or ruined cities.

Here are the best things to do in Hoi An, Vietnam.

1. Walk around the Old Town
Hoi An is something of a rarity in Vietnam as it managed to escape most of the bombing that razed many other cities to the ground during the Vietnam War.

This means that the beautiful buildings here were spared, and so you will still find some gorgeous architecture here in the Old Town which makes the perfect place to go for a walk and take in all the sights.

The Old Town has now been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is said to date back some 2,000 years.

2. Learn to cook Vietnamese food - Join a cookign class.
Hoi An is known for having a number of cooking schools where you can get stuck in and learn all about how to make some local dishes.

One of the more famous schools is the Gioan Restaurant and Cooking School and you can choose between either ordering something to eat here in the restaurant or you can sign up for a class.

These usually include a trip to the local market where you will learn all about the ingredients used in Vietnamese cooking and some of the dishes that you will get to prepare include pho noodles as well as spring rolls and banh xeo which is a kind of Vietnamese pancake.

3. Admire the Japanese Covered Bridge
The Japanese Covered Bridge is located in the centre of the city and is also one of its focal points.

The bridge spans some 12 meters and is famous for its ornate carvings, many of which are in the shape of monkeys and dogs.

This is also a very popular place for amorous Vietnamese couples who come here to take photographs as the bridge is considered a top romantic spot in Hoi An.

4. Visit Hoi An Silk Village
The Hoi An Silk Village is the place to come if you want to get outside the city and check out the ancient weaving techniques for which this part of Vietnam is known.

The village is located in Quang Nam Province which is around one kilometer from the centre of the city and you will find a quaint village with homes built in the traditional style.

The village is filled with artisans who will teach you how to make beautiful silk pieces and you can even feed the silkworms here and help to unravel their cocoons.

This is also a great place to buy some traditional silk pieces which make great gifts and souvenirs.

5. Drink a coffee in Hoi An Ancientown.
Vietnam is a country that is famous for its delicious coffee and Hoi An is no slouch when it comes to its own brews.

There are some of the best places to try the coffee in Hoi An is at Hoi An Roastery, La Thien Thai coffee or Mia Coffee who roast their own beans and serve up some of the most delicious espresso in the city.

The coffee varieties on offer here vary according to the season and all the beans here are handpicked to bring you the freshest and tastiest cups of coffee around.

You can even buy bags of beans here to take home as a souvenir.

6. Shop at the Lantern Market
The pretty Lantern Market is located in An Hoi which is across the river from central Hoi An.

This is one of the most scenic markets in Vietnam and, as the name suggests, you can buy traditional lanterns here which come in all different shapes and sizes.

Many of these are made of gorgeous Hoi An silk and you can walk around at night and take in all the amazing illuminated lanterns which come in a range of different hues.

7. Sunbathe on An Bang Beach
Hoi An has a number of beaches, but locals will tell you that An Bang is one of the best around.

This beach is less crowded than many of the more famous strips of sand in the area and you will find pristine white sands that back on to the water.

If you come here for the day then you will also find a number of charming beachside restaurants here that serve up some delicious seafood.

If you are planning to stay by the beach a little longer then you can also rent a beachside villa here.

8. Explore the local countryside
Hoi An is famous for being surrounded by lush emerald green countryside.

As such, if you are staying in the city then make sure that you don’t miss a trip here so that you can take in the rice paddies, hills, and dainty villages firsthand.

You can sign up for a number of tours such as a cycling or trekking tour and you will get to discover pretty secluded beaches, mountain passes and much more.

9. Visit Tra Que Village
Hoi An is known for its delicious fruit and vegetables and with that in mind you can come to Tra Que Village and check out the source in person.

The village is located between Hoi An and An Bang Beach and is made up of a local farming community who grow most of the produce that you will eat during your time in Hoi An.

On a trip to the village you can visit spots such as Water Wheel which has cooking classes so you can learn how the local produce is used, or you can have lunch at places like Baby Mustard which uses the freshest local ingredients.

10. Try the local barbecue & street foods
One of the things Hoi An is famous for is its delicious barbecue.

The best place to try this is along the north bank of the Thu Bon River and if you go there after dark you will find dozens of small charcoal grills set up which sell tasty barbecued skewers.

You can choose from different options including pork, prawns, or chicken, and the skewers are served with herbs and some rice paper wrappers which you can wrap around the meat or seafood.

The barbecue also comes with a delicious spicy peanut sauce mixed with tomatoes and sesame seeds.
