The Denali Star route spans from Anchorage in the south to Fairbanks in the north, stopping at Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Denali on the way. It runs in either direction, so you can also begin in Fairbanks and work south.

One of five routes operated by Alaska Railroad, it remains one of our favorite picks for an Alaska vacation, and one our Travel Designers enjoy experiencing themselves.

The Denali Star is Alaska Railroad's flagship route, running from Anchorage to Fairbanks through some of Alaska's wildest wilderness. Our team has experienced it firsthand, both end-to-end and in shorter sections, and it remains one of our top recommendations.

See dozens of bears in the wild on a fly-in excursion.

Katmai National Park alone is home to 2,200 brown bears, so it's not uncommon to see 30 in a single day as they fish for salmon, roam the shoreline, and interact.

Bear viewing is one of the best Alaska excursions and one we recommend to all our travelers as part of their Alaska experience, alongside train journeys, wilderness lodges, and more adventures.

Alaska has three types of bears you might spot: brown bears, grizzlies, and black bears.

🐻 Grizzly bears: live further inland and are often seen in Denali National Park, best spotted in spring and summer.
🐻 Coastal and Kodiak brown bears: the largest subspecies of bear and the largest land carnivore on Earth, often spotted at Brooks Falls from July through September.
🐻 Black bears: inhabit most forested areas of Alaska, with summer being the best time to spot them as they hibernate between October and April.

Homer is situated on the edge of the Kenai Peninsula and is comprised of the main town and a long spit that juts out into Kachemak Bay. It lives as an authentic small Alaskan town, and is best experienced as such.

Start your Homer exploration at the farmers market for local handmade gifts, art, and honey; then make your way along the Homer Spit. Watch for bald eagles overhead before ducking into the Salty Dawg Saloon to sign a dollar bill and tack it to the wall, as locals do. For a bite, La Baleine Café is our favorite spot for fresh, locally sourced meals.
