✨🌿 Sustainable Spotlight: Juan Solito Ecolodge 🌿✨

We’re spotlighting Juan Solito, located in the heart of the Colombian Llanos region, a grassland broken by forest-bordered rivers and occasional low-lying marshland. 🌾

This wildlife-rich haven focuses on minimizing its environmental footprint, recognizing the beautiful yet fragile ecosystems it resides on. It’s an excellent location for those who find calm in rustic simplicity. They practice eco and social responsibility by:

🏇 Working with the Llaneros, the local culture of this area, to deliver an interpretive nature experience.
🐍 Offering low-impact ways to view wildlife, such as boat rides, horseback, and on-foot along the river, searching for anacondas, caiman, and birds.
🍃 Not following a schedule! You never know what adventures you’ll wake up to at Juan Solito. The local Llaneros will listen to your interests and observe what nature offers them that day!

These are the Sarcophagi of Karajía in the Chachapoyas region of Peru. 🇵🇪

These seven striking burials were only discovered in 1985 due to their remote and unsuspecting location.

After death, the Chachapoya buried people of importance in hard-to-access locations, looking towards the rising sun. It is thought that the Sarcophagi of Karajía contained the highest officials from the fortress of Kuélap, another major highlight of the Chachapoyas region. 👑

✨🌿 Sustainable Spotlight: El Dorado Nature Reserve 🌿✨

Continuing our eco-lodge series, we have El Dorado Eco Lodge and Reserve! Where do we start... El Dorado is paradise in its truest form. Established in 2005 along the extraordinary Santa Marta mountain range in Colombia, El Dorado has made it its mission to restore the habitat of the endangered Santa Marta Parakeet. 🦜

The reserve sits on over 3200 acres of cloud forests and ecosystems, protecting it and working to restore its ecological health. Here are just some of their initiatives:

🍈Omitting red meat at their restaurant
📿 Supporting women-owned businesses by selling their artisanal crafts at the gift shop
📖 Diverting the proceeds from each visit into conservation projects for endangered species, local communities, women and youth, and environmental education programs.

✨🌿 Sustainable Spotlight: Araucana Lodge 🌿✨

Tucked inside a bamboo grove in the Western Andes of Colombia lies Araucana Lodge, a ten-room eco-lodge that lives off the natural resources surrounding them. Their forested trails, the organic vegetable garden they use in their cuisine, and the incredible bird life surrounding their property (186 species registered) are sure to astound!

They strive to protect the forests and watershed around them by:

🌧️ Capturing and re-using rainwater
🥬 Using herbs and vegetables from their organic garden in their kitchen
🎨 Relying on local artisans to decorate their spaces and local producers to supply flavours they don’t otherwise grow

Introducing the hidden gem of Minca, Colombia ✨🌱🇨🇴

Perched on a mountain in the Colombian Sierra Nevadas, Minca boasts a tiny population of 800 - truly an off-the-beaten-path settlement. But it is far from sleepy!

Surreal treks surround Minca, one of the only gateways to The Lost City, La Ciudad Perdida. It is also home to famous artisanal coffee houses (or fincas), cascading jungle waterfalls, and the most famous hammock in South America. 🌄

Happy Halloween, Explorers! 👻✨

On this All Hallows' Eve, we're unraveling a bone-chilling accommodation in the heart of Ottawa.

In Canada's Capital, there's a 150 year old jailhouse-turned-hostel that allows guests the experience of staying overnight "in jail". Don't get too comfortable though - this jail is said to be deeply, spine-tinglingly haunted.

Saintlo Ottawa Jail was the site of many executions, one of which being Patrick J. Whelan's hanging in 1869 for the assassination of a politician. Several staff and guests have reportedly seen Whelan's spirit appearing at the end of their beds in his death-row cell.

What’s lurking in Colombia’s Llanos region...? 🔍

A vast tropical grassland, the Llanos region in northern Colombia is characterized by savannah, shrubland, and wetlands, and is an area that even many local Colombians don’t get to see. A number of unique creatures can be found here, including:

🏜️ Capybara
🏜️ Jabiru
🏜️ Orinoco crocodile
🏜️ Llanos Long-nosed Armadillo
🏜️ Scarlet ibis
