If wildlife sightseeing is high on your list, timing your rail journey matters. Spring brings bears as hibernation ends, so they’re often spotted right from your train seat. September fills the rivers with spawning salmon, drawing bald eagles and, again, bears to the banks. By month's end, the elk rutting season begins.

But whenever you visit, you won't miss a thing. Your onboard Host will make sure of it with a “Moose on your left!” or “Bear on the right!" call 🐻

Traveling onboard Canada’s trains, you'll share the rail corridor between Vancouver and Jasper, Banff, and Lake Louise with some remarkable locals.

Bears, moose, elk, wolves, coyotes, bighorn sheep, and beavers all call this area home, and some of them are frequently spotted from the train. Look up too, as bald eagles and ospreys are known to soar above.

Rocky Mountaineer is a bucket-list trip for many. And rightfully so: few experiences rival viewing the Canadian Rockies through the train’s glass-domed windows.

In GoldLeaf Service, the upper seating level sits beneath a near-complete glass dome for unobstructed views of everything passing by.

And then there’s the round-the-clock service provided by the onboard Hosts. They do it all: serving seatside drinks and snacks, sharing the stories and history of the region, and announcing the occasional elk, bear, or eagle sighting along the tracks. 🦅

Rocky Mountaineer’s classic journeys begin or end in Vancouver. From the coast, the train carries you east over two or three days, through dramatically shifting landscapes, to your destination of Lake Louise, Banff, or Jasper.

One exception: the 2026-exclusive Passage to Peaks route travels between Banff and Jasper, running entirely through the Rockies.

A world-class mountain resort and host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler offers hiking trails, gondola rides, and a vibrant village to explore.

You can travel here from Vancouver by car, private transfer, or even as part of Rocky Mountaineer’s Rainforest to Gold Rush route.

The train arrives along the Sea-to-Sky Corridor, passing Howe Sound, Brandywine Falls, and the peaks of the Coast Mountains, so by the time you pull in, you’ve already had a full day of scenery.

2026 may be the last season to experience this Rocky Mountaineer route, so get in touch if the train to Whistler is on your bucket list: https://canadarailvacations.com/rail-rocky-mountaineer

On three Rocky Mountaineer routes, you'll have an overnight stay in Kamloops as you journey toward Banff, Jasper, or Lake Louise.

You'll take in highlights of the region along the way: dry, arid desert-like landscapes, the sparkling Kamloops Lake, and the winding Fraser River — a striking contrast to the lush forests you left behind, and the Rocky Mountain peaks to come.

Trains in Canada: Rocky Mountaineer vs VIA Rail

Rocky Mountaineer is loved for luxurious travel through the Rockies by daylight; VIA Rail for a coast-to-coast sleeper adventure, year-round. Both are unmissable, so we can help you choose one, or, better yet, combine both in one trip.

Two passenger trains regularly service Canada’s tracks, yet each offers a different kind of journey.

Rocky Mountaineer runs on exclusive tracks in daylight hours only — so you never miss a highlight — with comfortable hotels to rest in between. In GoldLeaf Service, you travel in the top level of glass dome coaches, with complimentary beverages always in hand, and dine on multi-course gourmet meals below in the dining room.

VIA Rail invites travelers into the bygone era of the sleeper train. Spend your days in the bubble-like Skyline Car, peeking over the silver roof to the wilderness beyond, and your nights tucked in bed.

Two days, two provinces: travel onboard the Skeena through Alberta and British Columbia.

Operated by VIA Rail, this 720-mile (1,160km) train route winds from Jasper deep into northern British Columbia, passing rapids, forests, and First Nations communities, before arriving at the Pacific coast in Prince Rupert.

The Skeena may be lesser known, yet it remains one of the most scenic rail journeys Canada has to offer.
