Accessed by boat, bush plane, or helicopter, the best Alaska lodges are scattered across the state's hidden areas, just waiting to be found.

One of them is Tutka Bay Lodge, a luxurious stay just a 40-minute boat ride from Homer. There, you will find old-growth forests, stone beaches, and hidden bays, and have them all to yourself. Spend your days hiking and kayaking through the wilds and join expert-led wildlife-viewing tours. Or, simply reconnect with nature with morning yoga, forest bathing, and true and unhindered immersion in the wilds.

Homer is situated on the edge of the Kenai Peninsula and is comprised of the main town and a long spit that juts out into Kachemak Bay. It lives as an authentic small Alaskan town, and is best experienced as such.

While the Alaska Railroad doesn't reach Homer directly, it's just a scenic 168-mile drive from Seward, making it a natural extension of any rail itinerary. Our Travel Designers can help you make it a part of your trip: https://alaskarail.com/location/homer

We always suggest our travelers take a rail trip through Alaska. It's not only convenient but also a relaxed and comfortable way to traverse the state that should be on your itinerary. Our team member Jenna, who spent time onboard, thinks so too:

“Alaska Railroad was a fantastic experience. On the Anchorage to Seward route, I loved having breakfast and coffee in the dining car before heading to the viewing platform to watch the ocean, mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers pass by. Every turn had something new, so I spent most of the journey here taking it all in.”

As we travel Alaska for the best recommendations for our clients, we never stop being impressed by the beauty of the state. Our Travel Designers, Caitlin and Andre, recently explored Kenai Fjords National Park with Adventure 60 North, and Caitlin shared:

“From the moment our guide picked us up from our hotel, it was clear we were getting a warm welcome to explore their big backyard of Kenai National Park and Exit Glacier. I loved getting a brief intro into forest foraging, identifying different plants, rocks and geological formations, and how to keep an eye out for animal spottings. It all came together when I saw my first ever moose – less than 10 feet from us on the hiking trail!”

Can you see the moose that Caitlin is talking about in the last picture?

As you venture deeper into the wilderness of Alaska on your rail trip, take time at each stop to explore the communities that call it home.

In Talkeetna, wander the small downtown, stop at the Roadhouse or Halibut Tacos for a bite to eat, and meet the town's artistic residents at Conscious Coffee. Jenna, one of our team members, visited recently and loved it: "Conscious Coffee was a really cute spot for morning coffee and a bagel."

Talkeetna is what you think of when you think 'small Alaskan town.' It is artistic, outdoorsy, and its two-block ‘Main Street’ is full of character. Quaint log cabins and clapboard wooden houses line the road and are dripping with rustic charm.

Whether stocking up on road trip snacks from Nagly’s General Store or getting a warm drink from Conscious Coffee on your way through town, you will absolutely not regret your time in the endlessly charming Talkeetna.

No matter the season, traveling the Alaska Railroad never disappoints. Our team recently got to experience just that, spending a day onboard. Here's what Jennifer shared after the ride:

“The views were stunning, the scenery just kept coming, with a blue sky view of Denali. It was a really relaxed and enjoyable ride. We saw 15 moose from the train; the staff felt authentic and friendly. Really enjoyed the café car to relax in, as it had big picture windows.”

The Best of Alaska Rail & Glaciers is our best-selling trip and our finest taster of the state, showing you exactly why we love it in under a week.

You’ll experience two Alaska Railroad journeys through narrow mountain passes, past rivers few ever see and glaciers that have existed for a millennium. Between trains, the itinerary is yours to shape: choose from a city tour of Anchorage, a Jeep excursion in Denali, or a helicopter glacier landing.
