Did you knowthere are 14 species of sharks found in the waters of British Columbia?

It’s Shark Awareness Day and we have fin-tastic news! 🎉🦈 This year, all online purchases from Parks Canada Shop will support research on shark species swimming around Gulf Islands National Park Reserve 😎

Why study sharks? As climate change impacts marine dynamics, understanding the sharks living in Canadian waters will help us dive deeper in learning how to protect the wider marine ecosystem.

Some fun facts about Turkey Buzzards:
1. They are the only vultures found in BC.
2. Their sense of smell is so sensitive that they can detect dead meat from 13 km away.
3. Their wingspan is 170 cm.
4. When they're frightened, they can be so full of meat that they cannot rapidly fly away. They might projectile vomit what they’ve eaten to lose weight and escape. If they target the predator’s face, the material can be blinding.
