WILDLIFE WONDERS WEDNESDAY: DO BIGG’S AND RESIDENT KILLER WHALES EVER MEET?

Normally the two ecotypes have nothing to do with one another. But there was an interaction observed in 1993 off Nanaimo on Vancouver Island’s east coast. The incident involved J-pod chasing three Bigg’s killer whales along the shoreline. Contact was made, and fresh rake marks were seen on the Bigg’s killer whale after they fled the scene. It’s not known what started the fracas, but J-pod had a new calf at the time so perhaps they were being protective!

Photo: T020, also known as Kwatsi, was one of three Bigg’s involved in the 1993 interaction. The other two were his mother and sister. Photo taken in 2013. Shorelines Photography / Eagle Wing Tours

Join us on the water for our next specialty birding tour on June 14. We're heading out to explore the sheltered northern waters of Haro Strait.

This tour is ideal for birders wanting to hone their ID skills on breeding plumage seabirds. With stops at key feeding, resting and breeding areas like Oak Bay, Sidney Spit and Mandarte Island—the largest seabird nesting colony in the Canadian Salish Sea—this is an unparalleled chance to see and learn about some of our region’s most fascinating bird populations!

WILDLIFE WONDERS WEDNESDAY: How are sea otters good for the marine environment?

Sea otters aren’t just a pretty face—they play a pivotal role in nearshore marine ecosystems. They live in or near kelp forests, which provide food and shelter for as many as 750 species of marine life. Kelp forests also help fight climate change by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere as they grow. How do sea otters help? They love to eat sea urchins which, if left unchecked, would completely devour the kelp. They keep the kelp forests healthy, which is why sea otters are a textbook example of a “keystone species!”
