Ocean adventures, coastal exploration, river runs and everything in between, the Ocean River Paddling Symposium celebrates the paddling lifestyle, bringing people together to share experiences, build skills, discover new adventures, and spend time on the water.

Let’s learn, chase adventure, explore new places, connect with fellow paddlers, and simply enjoy the West Coast outdoors, this is where it all comes together.

Look up! Those aren’t mosquitos. The turkey vultures are on the move.

Every fall, turkey vultures travel south down Vancouver Island, but the Strait of Juan de Fuca creates a pretty big obstacle.

Rather than flying straight across, they wait for warm air and favourable conditions. You’ll often see them “kettling”, circling together in huge groups on rising thermals to gain altitude before making the roughly 20 km crossing to Washington.

Their numbers on Vancouver Island have grown considerably over the past few decades, so fall can put on quite a show.

We are closed tomorrow September 30th for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Both of our Ocean River locations stand on the unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt).

From the shorter cedar and birch canoes built for lakes and rivers, to the larger dugout canoes meant for the rough waters of the west coast, and the sealskin kayaks designed for the cold and harsh conditions of the arctic, paddling will always be connected to Canada’s Indigenous people. We are profoundly aware of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the water sports we love so much.

We encourage all those who paddle to take September 30th as a day to reflect on their connection to the land on which they stand, the water through which they paddle and those who have paddled there long before them.

Have you been waiting for a sign? … Well here it is!

As the seasons change, we have been reflecting on our 2026 summer season … and what a fantastic summer it was!

A huge thank you to our incredible team and to everyone who came through Ocean River this year. If you stopped into the shop, joined us for a course or tour, rented a kayak or SUP, brought your kids to camp, joined our 55+ camp, or simply came down to say hello, thank you for being part of it.

During Ocean River’s 45th summer, we made new friends, welcomed back familiar faces, and as per usual… spent a whole lot of time on the water together.

But we’re definitely not done yet.

Fall and winter paddling is some of our favourite paddling of the year, and we’ll still be at the shop every day getting people geared up and out there.

We’re also getting excited for the kickoff of the 2027 Ocean River Paddling Symposium and, as always, are dreaming up a few new adventures for the year ahead.

Thank you for supporting a local business, our staff, and this paddling community we’re so proud to be a part of.

This comprehensive introductory sea kayak course will help you become confident in rougher waters (class-1 conditions), and progress beyond flat water kayaking into the world of sea kayaking.

The Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Level 1 Skills course will help you develop the skills for planning and executing sea kayaking day trips.

Topics include:
- strokes
- equipment
- navigation
- route planning
- weather interpretation
- capsizing
- kayak re-entry techniques
- assisting others

This course will allow you to join our social paddles year round 🚣‍♀️
