As we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, take time to listen deeply, learn with an open heart and engage in meaningful acknowledgement and reflection.
If you would like to listen and learn in person, here is some information on Sncəwips Heritage Museum & Gift Store. Anona Kampe will be facilitating a presentation on residential schools (11:00 am), followed by storytelling with Coralee Miller. Tea and Bannock will be served.

See blacksmithing in action at the Westbank Museum this Saturday, September 26.

Watch as raw iron is heated, shaped and worked by hand, and get a look at the skill and craftsmanship behind this traditional trade.

This is a great stop for anyone interested in local history, traditional crafts, or just something a little different to do this weekend.

💡 Fun Fact: In English Canada, the first blacksmiths were brought to Canada by the HBC in the 1670s. (The Canadian Encyclopedia)

This National Forest Week (Sept 20 – 26), take a moment to appreciate the forests that are part of our landscape, our history and our community.

Forests have long shaped life in the Okanagan. They support local livelihoods, provide places to explore and connect with nature, and continue to play an important role in how we care for this place today and into the future.

The sʔukinaqinx/syilx People have been stewards of these lands since time immemorial. Through initiatives such as the Westbank First Nation Community Forest, more than 47,000 hectares of forestland are managed with a balance of sustainable forestry and traditional uses, including hunting, food gathering and spiritual practices.

Our forests also tell the story of generations of local industry. Gorman Bros. Lumber grew from a small sawmill in the 1950s into a company with an international presence.

Together, these stories reflect the many connections between the land, culture, community and industry that have shaped our community.

Take some time this week to explore the evolving story of our community’s forest industry.
