Fun things to do in Whistler in the spring part 5:

Walk or bike to the train wreck!!

Park your car on Jane Lakes Road in Cheakamus and take the Sea to Sky trail to Train Wreck Express, cross the suspension bridge over the Cheakamus River and end up directly at the train wreck site.

This is a very easy hike/bike (rated green on ) suitable for walking or biking.

Beautiful views of the Cheakamus River and the graffitied train wreck.

Fun things to do in the spring in Whistler part 2:

Go mountain biking!! The snow melts quickly in the valley so the lower bike trails are ready to ride.

Lost Lake & Cheakamus are the first to thaw and are the perfect warm up for the season. Check for trail status.

For a larger variety of trails, take a trip down to Squamish where the elevation is lower and the snow melts quicker.

Fun things to do in Whistler in the spring part 1:

Go skiing!!! One mountain (either Whistler or Blackcomb) stays open until around May 22nd every year.

Get some sunny slushy laps in and who knows, if it's anything like this spring you might just get some killer powder days in too!!

Expect any snow/weather conditions. Snow, rain, slush, powder, ice, sun you name it, don't forget your sunscreen and waterproof jacket!

Is spring a good time to visit Whistler?

With the luck of good weather, Spring is one of the best times to visit.

You can do multiple sports in one day. With the snow in the valley melting and the mountain open until 4pm you could spend the morning golfing or biking and head up the mountain for an afternoon ski.

The days are long and the sun starts setting later so afternoons by the lake are the best!

The cherry on top is the spring discounts! Spring is the off season one of the cheapest times to visit Whistler, there are deals to be had on almost any activity you could think of.

Here’s a surprising question that I hear a lot:

“I’d love to take my family to Whistler, but we can’t handle skiing everyday for 7 days. Is there anything else to do?”

Well let me answer that for you: YES!!

Although Whistler is most famous for it’s epic skiing, you could spend an entire week jam packed full of activities and never touch a pair of skis (although I highly recommend you do ;))

✅Fly through the sky on a treetop zipline course
✅Snowmobile up the mountain under a blanket of stars to a rustic mountain hut for a fondue extravaganza
✅ Charge through the forest on a dog sled, snowshoe, cross country ski and SO MUCH MORE!!

Do you want to save money and miss the crowds in Whistler?

Here are a few tips on how to do it:

✅ Don't come on weekends and holidays (if possible)
✅ Time your day wisely (eat early or late, upload before lessons start at 9am)
✅ Book lunch reservations or bring your own so you don't have to wait in line at the cafeteria
✅ Book a ski lesson and skip all the lines!

WHITE OUT!

The clouds are low in Whistler and you might find yourself in a white out (this most commonly happens at the top of the mountain).

What can you do?

✅ Try to stick to the runs with trees and stay close to them for contrast and better spacial awareness
✅ If you are in the alpine and there are no trees, stick to the run markers which are on the sides
✅ Stay close to your group and only go as fast as the slowest person so you don't lose anybody
✅ Go somewhere lower on the mountain
✅ You can get special goggles that do well in flat light which is very helpful but can only do so much!

Whistler is a big mountain so make sure you study the map and know where you are and where you're going because getting out of a white out when you don't know where you are is a lot more difficult!!

Don't ski but still want to see the beautiful views?!

No problem!! 😍 The Whistler Village Gondola and Blackcomb Gondola are open for sightseers as well as skiers.

While you're up there the Peak to Peak gondola is a MUST. It will take you from the top of Whistler right across the valley to the top of Blackcomb (or vice versa). Talk about epic views!!

Bring your mask because they are mandatory in all lift lines and gondolas as well as indoors if you want to stop for a coffee, hot chocolate or treat while you're up there.

Whistler's ski runs are LONG so breaks are necessary, especially for young kids.

That's why the Treefort (Whistler Mountain) and the Magic Castle (Blackcomb Mountain) are there!

The Treefort is on Pony Trail/Bear Cub (accessible from both sides) and is about halfway down the run making it the perfect place to stop.

Magic Castle is on Easy Out closer to the bottom of the run.

PRO TIP: Bring some snacks along to eat while you have break at the Treefort or Magic Castle.

Whistler Village is the main village of 3 (Creekside, Whistler Village and Upper Village). You can find anything and everything you need here. The village is big, so if you're skiing make sure that your accommodation is ski-in, ski-out or within reasonable walking distance of the gondola because the last thing you want is to walk 1.5km in ski boot with kids in tow!!

If your accommodation isn't within walking distance you can rent lockers right at the base to save the hassle! Another option would be to have a car rental and get the free shuttle from Day lots 1-5.

FAMILY ZONE! 🤩

Whistler and Blackcomb mountains have designated family and slow zones throughout the mountain. These runs are highlighted in yellow on the trail map.

During busy times and at the end of the day these runs can get really crowded with people so make sure you and your kids always look up the hill before skiing down and always stop on top of a roll where people coming down can see you!

WATCH OUT! ⚠️

After years of ski instructing in Whistler I've learned that like many runs in Whistler, Green Acres is labelled as green but IT IS NOT A GREEN RUN! Don't be fooled but the green sign and the name of this run and definitely don't make this your first family ski run (if you're beginner or novice skiers) because it's STEEP!

There are many amazing green family runs but this isn't one of them and actually on the trail map this run is labelled as blue. Unfortunately this is not the only run questionably labelled in Whistler, here are some other ones to watch out for:

❌ Marmot - labelled green but the first sections is super steep and always icy
❌ Burnt Stew Trail - labelled green but has multiple steep and off camber sections. This trail has incredible views but definitely shouldn't be your first run after the magic carpet!
❌ The Saddle - labelled blue but it is steeper than Upper Dave Murray Downhill (black diamond)
❌ Peak to Creek - labelled blue but it has some pretty steep sections, it gets quite icy at the top and it's not always groomed. Make sure to check the grooming report before you go because it's LONG!

If you have questions on where to ski based on your ability level taking a ski lesson is always a great way to go. That way you can get to know the mountain with guidance. You can also ask mountain safety (dressed in yellow), ski patrol (in red) or send me a message and I'd be happy to give you some recommendations.

Waffles with a view!

If you're an intermediate skiier Crystal Hut for waffles is a MUST!! Crystal Hut is on Blackcomb Mountain and is accessible from Glacier Chair (ski down to the hut) or from Crystal Chair (the hut is at the top of the chair). The waffles are freshly made and soooo delicious!

PRO TIP: Either go first thing in the morning or close to the end of the day because the hut is tiny and can get really busy.

SKI TIP: There are no beginner runs to or from Crystal Hut. All the runs are labelled blue but they are all quite steep and I would consider them hard blues.
