Situated on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Magothy River, Gibson Island is an enchanting, two by three mile private island located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The island is accessed by a private, man-made causeway. The topography varies and includes low-lying, tidal wetlands, a 44-acre spring-fed lake, and rolling hills. Home sites account for about one third of the land, the remaining two thirds of land is devoted to open space, natural woods, a bird sanctuary and recreation. The Gibson Island harbor is a broad cove of the Magothy River sheltered from all sides, offering safe anchorage to both power and sail boats. A place of natural beauty and with no Bay Bridge to cross, Gibson Island is less than an hour from Baltimore, Washington and Annapolis, and less than 25 minutes from BWI Airport and the train station, yet feels like it is worlds away.

White Pine Beach at Sasamat Lake is a popular place to escape the urban grind and spend some time relaxing on the beach with the family. The beach is located just a few minutes outside of Coquitlam in Belcarra Regional Park. There are two nice sandy beaches with great swimming, a small concession booth, a few picnic tables, and washroom facilities. Additionally, a 2.5-kilometer walking trail follows the shoreline all the way around the lake and provides access to a few other smaller beach spots. A few longer hiking trails lead up into Belcarra Regional Park such as the Diez Vistas Trail, which offers spectacular views of Indian Arm.

The most common complaint about White Pine Beach is how crowded it can get, which is not surprising given its proximity to such a large city. Not unlike nearby Buntzen Lake Beach, it’s typically very busy here on a sunny day during the summer, so plan to arrive early in order to secure a parking spot and claim a bit of sand. Alternatively, it is possible to get here via public transit, which makes it a great option for those without access to a vehicle.
