““It was just more expensive than we expected to use a travel advisor.”
That’s what they told me.

And honestly?

That’s not true.

Here’s what actually happened.

These clients came to me after they booked their flights to Italy.

Flying into one region…
but wanting to settle into a more remote area for a few days.

Which, if you know Italy, you know:
That’s not a simple hop, skip, and jump.

That’s trains.
Private transfers.
Timing connections.

Mapping routes that actually make sense.

They paid my planning fee.
We had the conversations.
I understood their vision.

And I built the trip exactly how they asked.

Detailed.
Thoughtful.
Logistically sound.

And yes… it came in over budget.
But barely.

And more importantly?
It was real.

Because I wasn’t just pricing hotels.

I was accounting for:
Every train.
Every transfer.
Every check-in and check-out.
Every gap they’d have to fill on their own.

They came back asking for cuts.
I trimmed where I could.

But some costs?
They’re fixed.

You don’t “discount” geography.
You don’t “optimize” distance.
You don’t magically make rural Italy easier to reach.

Follow-up email #1.
Follow-up email #2.

And then the reply:
“We just didn’t realize it would be so expensive to use a travel advisor.”

But here’s the truth:

It wasn’t more expensive to use me.
It was more expensive to do the trip they wanted.

They just hadn’t thought about all the pieces.

Because that’s my job.

To think about the things you don’t see.

They ended up booking a couple Airbnbs on their own.

And I’ll be honest…
I’d love to see the receipts when it’s all said and done.

Because what most people don’t realize is this:
Not using a travel advisor doesn’t save you money.

It just delays when you pay for the mistakes.

The last-minute transfer you didn’t plan for
The overpriced train you book too late
The hotel in the wrong location
The meals you assumed were included (but aren’t)
The time and energy spent trying to fix it mid-trip

We don’t make travel more expensive.
We make the true cost visible upfront.

And sometimes?
That’s uncomfortable.

But I’d rather my clients feel that tension before they travel…
Than live it while they’re there.”
