Lobster season is almost here! Lobsters, known as "Jakejk", had been harvested by the Mi'kmaq for food, decorations, and fertilizer prior to the development of a commercial fishery. When early settlers arrived, they would gather the lobsters from windrows along the beach and spread them on the land for fertilizer.

Lobsters were so plentiful in the 1800s that Islanders could gather them by hand in shallows and tide-pools. Labourers were said to be very displeased with having to eat lobster several times a week! Today, lobster fishermen would start preparation for setting day months in advance, and lobster is now a delicacy that draws thousands of seasonal visitors to the Island.
